Ryan stared at me, his eyes dropping to where Marcus’s scent should have been. Our mate bond twisted with his growing horror.
“What are you doing here?” His voice cracked, raw with fear. “Where’s Marcus?”
I ignored him, turning toward the gate, Marcus’s favorite books clutched to my chest. His wolf pendant burned in my pocket.
Ryan’s hand caught my arm, his grip desperate. The touch that once brought comfort now made my skin crawl.
“Celeste, answer me! Where’s our son?”
Alexander’s growl vibrated through the ground. “Remove your hand from my sister–in–law, or I’ll remove it from your arm.”
“Dead.” Katherine’s voice rang out with cruel satisfaction, her silver hair catching the morning light. “The weak little murderer couldn’t handle a proper dose of silver. Just like his mother – no breeding, no strength.”
Ryan staggered back as if physically struck. “Silver? No… No, you didn’t-” His face drained of color. “Mother, what did you do?”
“Your mother did what you were too weak to do,” I said quietly, each word a shard of ice. “While you were vacationing with your real family, she put our son down like a rabid dog.”
Sarah stepped forward, her victory complete. She pushed Jamie ahead, the Beta token glinting on his chest. “Ryan, darling, forget
that killer pup. Jamie is your true heir now. He always was.”
“SHUT UP!” Ryan’s roar shook the windows, making Jamie flinch and hide behind his mother. “Marcus was my son! My blood!”
William emerged from the house, his face thunderous with decades of Beta authority. “The boy was a murderer who got what he
deserved. Jamie is your heir now – look at him, wearing your Beta token with pride! The token that should have been his from birth!”
Something in Ryan broke. He collapsed to his knees, horrible laughter bubbling up – the sound of a wolf losing his mind.
“Jamie killed that pup,” he choked out between laughs. “Marcus was innocent. I knew… I always knew… I let you convince me to
sacrifice my own son to protect a murderer!”
Katherine’s face contorted. “Lies! Jamie would never-”
“And I lost my son for it!” Ryan crawled toward me on his knees, reaching for my hand. “Celeste, please. I’ll make them pay. I’ll avenge him-”

William’s hand cracked across Ryan’s face, drawing blood. “You let us kill our own grandson? For this whore’s murdering brat?”
Katherine swayed, her aristocratic facade crumbling. “The dead pup was our blood? Our true heir?”
