My Love Until the Last Goodbye (Mary and Maximus) novel Chapter 945

The morning sun slipped through the curtains, its rays creeping in like a thief. Alexia stirred clumsily, her movements a little stronger than before, as she tried to pull the sheet over herself to block out the light.

“Beautiful… I’m so happy to see you waking up! The doctor will be here today for your therapy,” said Mr. Bouygues.

“Pierre… I’m exhausted. Can’t we just stop? Honestly, I don’t think I’ll ever improve more than I already have,” Alexia said, gripping the sheet tightly.

“The doctor said you’ve made a lot of progress. The fact that you could move your hand was a huge step—it gave us a chance to assess how much nerve damage you really have,” Pierre replied calmly.

“I just feel clumsier every day… I don’t want to keep doing this therapy. If you had just let me die… I would finally be free from this torment.”

“Alexia, all I want is to bring a little happiness back into your life. Why can’t you understand that?” Pierre said, gently stroking her delicate face.

“Pierre… I just need you to understand that no matter how much we try, nothing really changes. I’m still suffering—the bedsores, the constant exhaustion, the aches all over my body…” Alexia’s voice wavered, her eyes filling with tears.

“Well, Alexia Levett, I won’t give up. Even if I have to spend my entire fortune, I’ll find a cure—or at the very least, a way to help you live a better life. Remember I told you about a new prosthetic we were going to try? It’ll arrive in a couple of weeks. Until then, we need to keep working on your movement.”

“Pierre…” Alexia whispered.

“Shh, my love, just hold on. We’ll find a way to get you through this,” Pierre reassured her patiently.

“Pierre, please… promise me that if my condition ever worsens, you’ll let me go. I’m not strong enough to keep suffering. I’m too tired… I just want it all to end,” Alexia said as Pierre carefully fed her.

“Alexia, I never want you to suffer. It breaks my heart to see you like this. All I want is for you to have a better life,” Pierre replied, his voice heavy with emotion.

“You don’t get it, Pierre. I want to be free from the weight of my conscience. Every single day, I carry the burden of my past. When I was young, all I wanted was to find someone who loved me. Someone to go to the movies with, to share an ice cream with, to walk through the park with… But life took a different turn. And look at me now. This is a curse—I’m still alive, but at what cost?” Alexia’s voice cracked with anger and pain.

Pierre could only watch as the woman he loved refused, time and time again, to see the life she still had. He needed her to be okay. He needed her, he needed her son, he needed a life with her. But no matter how hard he tried, nothing ever seemed to be enough.
