My Love Until the Last Goodbye (Mary and Maximus) novel Chapter 942

Maximus looked at his family and felt everything he had once dreamed of as a child. And yet, something still robbed him of peace—Lucius.

Even if the boy didn’t hold him in high regard, Maximus still saw him as his son. He couldn’t forget the memories of Lucius as a baby—how he used to crawl into his room, how he’d lift him into his arms and feel his tiny hands grasp his finger. His pouty expressions, his babbling, the warmth of his little body—all of it had been a light in Maximus’s darkest days.

And now, watching Peter embrace fatherhood, Maximus couldn’t help but remember those lost moments.

He had to admit—anger boiled inside him. Leonardo and Frank had stolen his chance to be a father. But he wasn’t blameless either. He had been too focused on the company, too absent when his son had needed him most.

If he had paid more attention to his family, maybe things wouldn’t have spiraled the way they had.

He took a sip of whiskey, staring out the window of his office, deep in thought. Catherine's house was another weight on his mind—filled with memories, filled with baggage. Laura had asked him to handle the properties, but even she didn’t know what to do with them.

And honestly? Neither did he.

A sudden arrival snapped him out of his thoughts—the investigator he had hired to find Lucius.

Maximus’s stomach tensed. If the man was here, that meant he had news. Good or bad… he was about to find out.

The butler led the man into the study, and Maximus forced himself to stay calm.

"Mr. Evans," the investigator greeted, extending a hand.

Maximus walked over and shook it.

"Mr. Parker, how are you?"

"Well, sir, very well. And actually… I bring good news." The man smiled.

"Do you?" Maximus asked, his surprise evident.

"Yes, sir! It took some time—your son is very well protected. But we finally uncovered some information." Parker pulled a folder from his briefcase.

Maximus frowned. Protected? By who?

As far as he knew, the only person who had been watching over Lucius and Alexia was Peter. But with everything happening—the trials, Peter’s surgery—there was no way he had time to keep them hidden.

"Alright, show me. Where is my son?" Maximus demanded, sitting up straighter.

"It’s not a matter of where, sir. It’s a matter of who he’s with," Parker said hesitantly.

Maximus’s jaw tensed. "Speak plainly."

"My apologies. What I found was surprising to me as well… Your son, Lucius Palmer, was under the care of his mother, Alexia Levett."

Maximus froze.

"If Moriarty has been hiding him… does that mean Lucius is in danger?"

"I can’t say for sure, sir. What I can tell you is that Lucius spent time living with Moriarty. His wife, Angela Sinclair, has been taking care of him."

Maximus exhaled through his nose. Moriarty’s wife was looking after his son?

"Then I’ll go straight to Moriarty myself. I’ll find out exactly what the hell he wants with my son."

"It’s not the wisest choice, sir," Parker warned. "But… if you think you can get answers from Moriarty, then by all means. This investigation could take years, but with a single conversation, you might get what we never could."

Maximus took the report, flipping through the pages while Parker continued talking about Alexia and Lucius.

But his mind was elsewhere.

'How the hell am I supposed to get close to Anthony Moriarty?'

Government officials were not his area of expertise. That was something Mateo—his former assistant—handled. But for now, Mateo was off on some well-earned vacation, relaxing on a beach somewhere.

Maximus didn’t have time to wait.

If Moriarty was keeping Lucius hidden… then it was time to find out why.
