After the three men had finally spoken, the microphone was passed to the mothers. The first to speak was Katherine, as she was closest.
“Alden & Serenity, I’m so happy to be here today, to witness my son as he truly begins his life. My son, you are strong and wise, and I know you will fulfill your role well.” She sighed, trying to hold back tears. “Your father did a lot for you over these past six years. He brought you here as a child and turned you into a good man. I have to admire him for that. But to me, you will always be my baby, and I will cherish every visit.”
“Serenity, you are a good woman. Always hold your head high and carry yourself with the strength and pride of the woman you are. Now, you will be a proud mother—not of one but of two, two beautiful souls entrusted to you by life, to love and protect.”
Katherine was a direct woman, raised to be concise and to the point. Without hesitation, she handed the microphone to Serenity’s mother.
Valerie was taken aback by the weight of those words. Her daughter’s mother-in-law was undoubtedly a strong and proud woman, but not in an overbearing way. She was someone worthy of admiration.
“Serenity & Alden, my children—because to me, you are both my children now—it’s hard to accept that you’ll be living far from me. But as everyone has said, it’s time for you to fly, and I couldn’t be happier to help make that possible,” Valerie said, her voice thick with emotion.
"As a mother, my daughter, I feel like you’re taking a piece of my heart with you. But as a woman, I recognize that you have made a wonderful choice.
“All I can wish for you is a long and happy life together. I hope you get to watch your children grow, that you one day stand in this very moment with them, and that you always feel proud of the life you build together.
“Now, I want to raise a toast—to you, to this beautiful union of families. Because whether you realize it or not, I do. I have a keen eye, and I can see that your marriage has brought three families together.
“And let us not forget the one who started this entire journey. She is here with us—our dear Mary Preston, who, years ago, entered the lives of two families that, today, have become three.”
