"I guess… she must be his wife, right?"
"No, no! I heard Mr. Atkinson hasn't married yet."
"Even if she's not his wife, she must be someone he really likes. Look at her—she's breathtakingly beautiful! Mr. Atkinson is bound to like her."
Not far away, a few people were watching Mabel, chatting amongst themselves.
Their voices weren't low, and it was easy for Mabel to overhear.
Hearing those words, the corners of Mabel's lips lifted slightly—those comments were quite pleasant to the ears.
She had always been confident in her beauty. Otherwise, she wouldn't have believed that none of her brother's friends were worthy of her.
…
Meanwhile, a little distance away, Vivian—tired from walking—finally saw the government office ahead.
She let out a long sigh of relief. Finally!
She had been asking for directions along the way, but most people assumed she was heading to the government office to get food and kindly pointed her in the right direction.
Even so, there were no clear road signs, and she had gotten lost several times. Estimating the time, she figured she had been walking for almost two hours—her feet ached terribly.
Just as she was about to step forward, she overheard a conversation nearby.
Someone Manfred liked?
She hadn't been paying attention earlier, but now that she looked carefully, she saw a woman standing in front of the entrance.
She couldn't clearly see her face, but she exuded a cold, proud demeanor. Manfred liked her?
A strange tightness gripped Vivian's chest—a feeling of unease.
At that moment, a guard stepped forward. "This is an official government office—stay back!"
His harsh tone was meant to be intimidating. Any ordinary person would have been scared off immediately.
After all, in times like these, who would dare challenge the government?
And these guards were armed—one swing of a blade, and a life could be easily taken.
"Did you hear that? Get going!" Mabel waved her hand dismissively, as if shooing away a fly.
Vivian remained still. Instead, she spoke up. "Please inform Mr. Atkinson. My name is Vivian Martin—I need to see him."
Mabel raised a brow, annoyed. "Vivian... Martin? What kind of name is that?
"Mr. Atkinson just arrived in Briarpatch—he's swamped with work. If every beggar came here like you demanding to see him, should the guards announce each one? Wouldn't that exhaust them? Wouldn't Mr. Atkinson be worked to death?"

Is the author going to finally portray Skylark as a brave woman who can argue and communicate like a normal person in this real world? Hoping so.......
I don't like this story portraying Skylark's personality as too weak, too naive, Can't even defend herself Like accepting every humiliation from Vera's schemes and injustice without saying anything or doing anything. I wonder who is the protagonist in this novel, Vera or Skylark....
