If one hadn't seen Briarpatch with their own eyes, they would never believe that such a hell on earth existed.
That corrupt official Quillan deserved death by a thousand cuts!
Manfred raised his hand coldly. "Interrogate him first. Have him write down every crime he has committed over the years, one by one, and have him sign his confession."
The moment Quillan—who had already been dragged to the doorway—heard the words, he screamed and begged for mercy.
"Put him through every single torture device in the prison, one by one," Kemp instructed the two soldiers dragging Quillan away.
The soldiers immediately responded, "Yes, sir!"
As Quillan was taken away, Manfred's expression finally eased a little. "He left behind quite a mess. Over the next few days, send people to investigate thoroughly—nothing must be overlooked."
"Understood."
His gaze then swept over the puddle of urine on the floor. His face remained as cold as ice. "Have someone clean this up immediately."
At that moment, a woman in bright red robes strode in swiftly.
"Mr. Atkinson, Quillan absolutely cannot be spared! I just went out and asked around—so many people have lost their homes and land because of him! He even preyed on women! That man is worse than a beast!"
Just as Kemp was about to step outside, he saw the woman charging straight toward Manfred and immediately raised his hand to stop her.
"Ms. Lynch, Mr. Atkinson will decide how to handle Quillan. This is a government office—this is not a place for you," Kemp's voice was calm but firm.
The woman, Mabel Lynch, was the daughter of one of the Holland troop's deputy generals.
She had grown up wielding swords and spears at the border, completely different from the delicate young ladies of noble families.
She had never been shy or reserved, and she often spent time chatting with men about war and politics.
This time, her father and brother had both followed Manfred to Briarpatch, and she had come along as well.
She frequently found excuses to appear in front of Manfred.
And while Manfred tolerated her out of respect for her father and brother, that did not mean he welcomed her presence.
Mabel frowned, clearly displeased. "I know this is the government office—I'm only here to inform Mr. Atkinson of the people's grievances.
"Anyone who saw what these poor commoners have suffered would feel outraged, not just me. I know Mr. Atkinson won't mind."
As she finished speaking, she secretly observed Manfred's expression.
For a long time, she had been hinting at her feelings for him.
Since he didn't like those pretentious noble ladies in Vlario, he must prefer someone bold and straightforward like her, a woman of the frontier.
She knew about his fiancée, but if this woman truly existed, why had no one ever seen her?
She was convinced that Manfred had simply never met the right woman yet.
Manfred's eyes flashed with impatience. "Kemp, escort Ms. Lynch out."
"Ms. Lynch, please. Mr. Atkinson has only just arrived in Briarpatch and still needs time to rest. He must not be disturbed," Kemp's voice was steady and unyielding.

Is the author going to finally portray Skylark as a brave woman who can argue and communicate like a normal person in this real world? Hoping so.......
I don't like this story portraying Skylark's personality as too weak, too naive, Can't even defend herself Like accepting every humiliation from Vera's schemes and injustice without saying anything or doing anything. I wonder who is the protagonist in this novel, Vera or Skylark....
