Behind Cyril, the maids held a thin, frayed blanket, and food was brought in a wooden bucket. It was clear he had no intention of offering anything worthwhile.
Vivian immediately stepped outside.
When she saw the spoiled, mixed food in the wooden bucket, her face drained of color. This man was utterly despicable.
Without thinking, she slapped Cyril twice across the face.
Cyril yelped in pain. "Who… Who hit me?"
"No… No one, Mr. Cyril…" one of the maids behind him stammered, visibly terrified.
The maid wondered, "What is going on? Something strange happens every time Mr. Cyril visits Mr. Manfred."
It was even more bizarre now. He was claiming someone had struck him.
In the Atkinson family, no one dared to strike Cyril. Besides, Manfred hadn't even shown himself.
The maid wondered if he had frozen to death, though someone had seen him walking around the courtyard just the day before.
Cyril suddenly became aware of the silence. He looked around but saw nothing; there was no sign of Manfred. His expression shifted immediately.
"This is getting stranger and stranger. Manfred is becoming more and more eerie."
"There's a ghost. There must be!" another maid cried out.
No one had ever hit him this hard before. His entire face burned with pain. He wondered if ghosts could cause such agony.
"Shameless." Vivian sneered.
That sneer made Cyril jump. "Ah! Run, run! It's a female ghost! A female ghost!"
The other maids were also frightened. They had heard it too—a female voice saying "shameless".
The voice was icy cold, colder than the snow in winter.
The maids fled as fast as they could, abandoning the tattered blanket and the bucket of spoiled food.

Is the author going to finally portray Skylark as a brave woman who can argue and communicate like a normal person in this real world? Hoping so.......
I don't like this story portraying Skylark's personality as too weak, too naive, Can't even defend herself Like accepting every humiliation from Vera's schemes and injustice without saying anything or doing anything. I wonder who is the protagonist in this novel, Vera or Skylark....
