Joe's tone softened as he reassured her. "I'll have someone investigate. We'll find out who's been contacting these people behind the scenes."
"That's a good idea," Skylar replied.
Sharing her concerns with Joe eased some of the tension that had been weighing on her. The uncertainty pressing on her chest felt a little lighter now.
Joe dialed Paul's number. The phone rang for nearly a minute before going to voicemail. His brows furrowed slightly in surprise.
Paul had always been prompt, answering on the first or second ring since the day he started working for him. This was the first time a call had gone straight to voicemail.
"Are you calling Paul?" Skylar asked.
"Yeah, but he didn't pick up."
"It's not urgent. We can wait until tomorrow to talk to him in person. He can investigate later."
"Alright." Joe nodded.

The next morning, at 9:00 am, Mona drove herself to the hospital for her scheduled prenatal checkup. She had initially hoped Steven could take time off work to accompany her, but his workload had been overwhelming lately.
The checkups typically consumed her entire morning, and Steven had mentioned that Ruth might be following her. He even suggested Ruth could be planning something malicious.
A few minutes later, she emerged from the bakery, the warm aroma of freshly baked bread wafting from the bag in her hands.
"Mona!"
The sudden voice startled her, and she froze. Her mind went blank for a moment.
Without turning around, she instinctively reached for her car door, intent on getting inside.
"Mona, I'm talking to you. Why are you ignoring me? Isn't that a bit too heartless? No matter what, you're still my sister-in-law, aren't you?" Ruth's voice grew louder as she ran up and grabbed Mona's arm.

Is the author going to finally portray Skylark as a brave woman who can argue and communicate like a normal person in this real world? Hoping so.......
I don't like this story portraying Skylark's personality as too weak, too naive, Can't even defend herself Like accepting every humiliation from Vera's schemes and injustice without saying anything or doing anything. I wonder who is the protagonist in this novel, Vera or Skylark....
