Ruth was stunned. "The show is canceled? We already signed the contract. How can you just cancel it?"
She had been counting on the money. The paycheck from this variety show was substantial.
The producer, exasperated by Ruth's indignation, snapped back. "So what if there's a contract? Didn't you read the terms? Besides, the show's cancellation is your fault for lying.
"Our team should be suing you for damages. We had other celebrities lined up, but because of you, the entire production fell apart."
Ruth's eyes widened in disbelief. "This has nothing to do with me. Everything I said is true. I am Charles' sister. You must've seen the reports a few years back, right?
"My parents held a press conference back then to get Charles and the others to help me. They even publicly acknowledged it. As for legal proof of our relationship—who goes out of their way to get that unless absolutely necessary?
"This is on you for not clarifying things beforehand. I turned down so many jobs to make time for your show. If anyone deserves compensation, it's me!"
"You've got some nerve!" The producer's frustration boiled over. "I remember that press conference. Your parents were shameless, and clearly, you take after them. If we had known you were their daughter, we wouldn't have even considered you for this show. And now you're demanding compensation from us? Do you even want to work in Jipsburg anymore?"
Any other celebrity might have scrambled to apologize, terrified of ruining their reputation and prospects. But Ruth stood her ground, bold and defiant, as if oblivious to how precarious her position was. To the producer, she was nothing more than an attention-seeker trying to use the show to gain fame.
He wondered where she got her confidence—or her audacity.
Besides, the team had just received damning information about Ruth and her family. The things they had done were appalling.
If they hadn't double-checked with Charles and allowed Ruth on the show, it could have been disastrous. Imagine the fallout if Ruth started airing dirt about Charles during the program. The team would have faced a slew of legal notices.
It wouldn't just ruin their show—it could jeopardize the entire network. The outrage from fans and viewers could bury them.
But Ruth didn't grasp the stakes. She only cared about her lost payment. "How dare you blame me for this? If you don't take responsibility, I'll go to the media and expose your team for bullying me."
"You're out of your mind!" the producer yelled before hanging up. He refused to waste another second on her.
Let Ruth try her stunts. The team wasn't worried about her tantrums or threats to involve reporters.
"We're all just human, aren't we? So why do some people get to live like kings while people like us are stuck at the bottom? You at least came from a wealthy family and got to enjoy some of that life. I never even had that. So yeah, I'm probably more jealous than you."
Ruth nodded vigorously. "That's exactly why it's so unfair. I've experienced that kind of life before, and I know what I'm missing. It's infuriating. You know, if it weren't for certain people deliberately sabotaging me, I'd already be back home by now. My brothers are all loaded, yet here I am, scraping by with these ridiculous photo shoots just to survive."
"You've got it worse than me, that's for sure!" Jed said with a forced smile.
"What if I told you we don't have to live like this anymore? What if we could change everything? You just have to be bold enough," Ruth said.
Jed's interest was piqued. He narrowed his eyes, a sly grin tugging at the corners of his mouth. "You have a plan?"
"If you follow my lead, Jed, the two of us could live the life we deserve."
Ambition burned in her eyes as she spoke, her mind already working through the details of her scheme.

Is the author going to finally portray Skylark as a brave woman who can argue and communicate like a normal person in this real world? Hoping so.......
I don't like this story portraying Skylark's personality as too weak, too naive, Can't even defend herself Like accepting every humiliation from Vera's schemes and injustice without saying anything or doing anything. I wonder who is the protagonist in this novel, Vera or Skylark....
