Because Natalie was pregnant, the plan to go out for karaoke with a few friends that night was canceled.
After dinner, Skylar accompanied Natalie for a walk along the river.
"I still feel like I'm a kid. But now… I'm already turning 30 and entering a new stage of life. I'm going to be a mother soon," Natalie said softly, her hand resting on her belly, a mix of joy and confusion on her face.
Skylar sighed, "Time really does fly."
"Yeah, it feels like our youthful days were just yesterday. By the way, when are you and Joe planning to have a baby?" Natalie asked.
Skylar suddenly realized she hadn't shared some past details with Natalie. With a smile, she replied, "Maybe in two years. It's just not the right time yet."
Watching her friends become mothers one after another stirred something in her—a quiet envy she couldn't ignore. But she knew she and Joe had to wait for the right moment.
In the past two years, her relationship with Joe had deepened. Sometimes, he would joke about how a child would come between them, stealing away her love and attention.
Though his words were playful, Skylar couldn't help but notice the flicker of discomfort in his eyes when the topic came up. Not long ago, during a visit to Steven's home, Joe had been utterly captivated by Steven's daughter, unable to tear his gaze away.
Then there was Mona, who was due to give birth in a couple of months, and Minerva, who had recently welcomed a healthy, chubby baby boy into the world.
"The right time hasn't come yet? I understand." Natalie nodded, not pressing the issue further. She turned her gaze to the shimmering river.
Just then, a group of people walked past them, their conversation carrying through the quiet evening.
"Did you hear? Jeremy Hughes, the CEO of the Hughes Group, just divorced, and now he's with Helena! It's all over the news!"
Helena's relationship with Jeremy had always been complicated. Their on-again, off-again dynamic had been the subject of endless speculation. When Jeremy married someone else, Helena left the country to focus on her career. She only recently returned to Jipsburg.
"He must care for Helena, but he just hasn't realized it yet," Natalie remarked thoughtfully.
Having known Jeremy since childhood, Natalie was well-acquainted with his personality. When it came to feelings, he was notoriously slow to catch on.
Skylar nodded in agreement. Natalie understood Jeremy better than anyone.
Over the years, so much had changed—friendships, relationships, and even the people they once thought they knew. Time left its mark on everything.
Suddenly, a phone rang, its ringtone breaking the stillness. Skylar reached into her bag, pulled out her phone, and answered it.

Is the author going to finally portray Skylark as a brave woman who can argue and communicate like a normal person in this real world? Hoping so.......
I don't like this story portraying Skylark's personality as too weak, too naive, Can't even defend herself Like accepting every humiliation from Vera's schemes and injustice without saying anything or doing anything. I wonder who is the protagonist in this novel, Vera or Skylark....
