Natalie could tell that Skylar was worried about her. But at this moment, she had other things to focus on.
"Austin's family doesn't like me. They think I'm not good enough for him just because of my past marriage. I wasn't prepared for this when I came here. I was so naïve. Maybe Austin didn't expect his family to be so blunt with us, either," Natalie said, forcing a bitter laugh.
She paused, but there was no real sadness in her tone.
Before coming here, Natalie had prepared herself mentally. She had known this might be the end for her and Austin.
Sometimes, she still hoped that Austin would be like the person from those early news reports—someone without any family background.
If that were the case, there would be no obstacles for them to be together. Their feelings for each other would have been purer.
But sadly, that wasn't meant to be, and they weren't fated to be together.
Skylar's voice softened. "Are you getting used to staying in the hotel?"
"It's a five-star suite. Of course I'd be used to it. It's just that I miss home," Natalie replied with a faint smile.
She gazed out at the unfamiliar landscape of the foreign country, her thoughts drifting back to her family. No matter how luxurious the suite, nothing compared to the comfort of her own small bed.
"I'll wait for you to return," Skylar said kindly.
Natalie felt her eyes welling up. "I'm craving fondue. The one in front of our school. Can you take me there when I get back?"
"Have you booked your flight?"
"Yes, for the day after tomorrow."
"Then I'll pick you up at the airport, and we'll go straight to the fondue restaurant."
After Natalie agreed, the call ended. As Natalie put her phone down, there was a knock at the door.
In a foreign land, it was easy to guess who would be looking for her now.
As she spoke, she couldn't help but admire herself. She never imagined that one day, she would be so serious, trying to comfort someone.
She had grown up. She was no longer the reckless Natalie she had been before.
If Austin's father hadn't been diagnosed with cancer, she would have been unhesitating in continuing her relationship with him, no matter the obstacles.
But fate had a way of playing games with people.
She had seen it in his eyes just now—Austin hadn't slept in days. His eyes were bloodshot, and there were dark circles under his eyes.
Austin turned around and lowered his gaze to meet hers.
She was smiling, but her eyes were filled with tears.
"Wait for me," Austin whispered.

Is the author going to finally portray Skylark as a brave woman who can argue and communicate like a normal person in this real world? Hoping so.......
I don't like this story portraying Skylark's personality as too weak, too naive, Can't even defend herself Like accepting every humiliation from Vera's schemes and injustice without saying anything or doing anything. I wonder who is the protagonist in this novel, Vera or Skylark....
