Joe said, "It still needs to be proven, or else it won't be convincing enough."
…
The next day, Skylar stayed in bed. Thankfully, it was Saturday. But Joe had a business engagement.
Skylar knew exactly when he left. She even knew he'd kissed her forehead before he left.
But she simply didn't have the energy to get up. She wanted to keep sleeping.
She fell asleep again, and when she woke up, it was already noon.
On the table was the breakfast Joe had made for her that morning. He had made some chicken soup. Simple, yet he made it so well.
They both preferred being alone, so they hadn't asked Edgar and Veronica to take care of things. Moreover, they were both getting older and deserved to enjoy their retirement.
Skylar drank her chicken soup as she dialed Aiken's number.
"Do you have a way to get in touch with Simona's roommates?" she asked.
This had to be handled without alarming Simona or Stephen.
Aiken replied, "Give me a day or two, and I'll make arrangements."
Skylar knew Aiken had plenty of ways to make things work, so she felt at ease. "Alright, leave the rest to me. I have a way to ensure the negative item on Stephen won't affect Simona."
"Damn negative item!" Aiken couldn't hold back a curse.
He rubbed his temples, the chaos in Jipsburg increasingly troubling him.
Both he and Joe were in a precarious position. Thankfully, Skylar was there.
…
The breeze drifted gently by the riverbank. Stephen cupped Simona's face under the shade of the trees and kissed her hard.
Simona didn't respond with much enthusiasm.
Even she couldn't understand it.
In the past, every kiss would send her heart racing. Lately, even though they had reconciled, she had found herself feeling a resistance toward him and his kisses.

Is the author going to finally portray Skylark as a brave woman who can argue and communicate like a normal person in this real world? Hoping so.......
I don't like this story portraying Skylark's personality as too weak, too naive, Can't even defend herself Like accepting every humiliation from Vera's schemes and injustice without saying anything or doing anything. I wonder who is the protagonist in this novel, Vera or Skylark....
