My Birthday, My Downfall novel Chapter 20

In the fifth year after being recognized back into my real parents, the fake heiress, Gina, crashed her car and broke my leg.

My parents and first love James rushed me to the hospital, and when the doctor said I might need a wheelchair for the rest of my life, James immediately proposed to me, saying he would take care of me forever.

My parents also severed ties with Gina, asking me to give them the car accident evidence so they could handle it while I focused on recovering.

Later, they told me that Gina had fled in fear of the crime and accidentally drowned. I believed them.

But in the fifth year of our marriage, I unexpectedly saw the "dead" Gina, holding a little boy, speaking to James emotionally:

"These years, I'm so grateful for you and my parents. Otherwise, I might really have ended up being sent to jail by Gloria."

"She never imagined that you and I would have a son, and that even my parents helped me-destroying the evidence and replacing her recovery medicine with vitamins."

"James, I'm sorry for all the sacrifices you've made, marrying that disabled woman and acting in front of her."

"Don’t say that. Only by marrying her could I offer forgiveness letters to police as her family member, clearing your name."

"As long as you and our son are well, my sacrifice is worth it."

It turns out... everything was nothing but a scam.

In the hospital lobby, I watched Gina holding her son and smiling happily with James’s family..

My heart seemed to be ripped out and the pain was suffocating.

The phone rang-it was my mom.

"Gloria, why didn’t you wait for us at the hospital? We’re on our way, where are you?"

Hearing her anxious tone, strong anger surged in my chest.

Clenching my fists, my nails dug into my flesh.

"Oh, I just thought I couldn’t keep troubling you all my life, so I came for this rehab treatment on my own."

"We’re the closest family, how could we think you’re a trouble? Are you at the hospital now? We’ll be there soon!"

Every time I came for rehab before, my parents always accompanied me. I thought it was because they cared, but now I realized there was another reason.

"Mm, I just got here, heading to the first-floor lobby."

I moved my wheelchair around the corner, deliberately saying it.

Sure enough, my parents' tone became urgent. They told me not to enter yet as it was too crowded and unsafe inside. They were nearby and would come find me immediately.

Mom tentatively asked, "You didn’t see anyone, did you?"

Her nervous expression stabbed me deeply. At that moment, I wanted to shout and ask, Why did you lie to me?

But I knew, it was pointless now.

Anyway, I had already decided to leave.

"See anyone? I had to go to the bathroom, I was in there for a long time, didn’t notice anyone."

Seeing that I didn’t look like I was lying, my parents breathed a sigh of relief.

"Let’s go, we’ll accompany you upstairs."

Dad pushed my wheelchair, and mom squatted down to put on my mask.

"Flu season is serious, you need to protect yourself, or mom will worry if you get sick."

If this were before, I would have been deeply touched by the worry in her eyes.

But now, I couldn’t feel any love in them.
