In the bustling university town of Ontoky City, the annual college admissions were a topic that passed by with little fanfare among the students.
Sweetheart, a student at Ontoky University, caught wind of the admissions buzz from her dorm mate's offhand comment. There was talk of a prodigy who had cracked a formidable math problem, warranting exceptional admission offers from several top-tier institutions.
Such geniuses were rarities, not the kind of people you'd run into every day, so Sweetheart didn't give it much thought.
While live-streaming, she lamented, "Someone's hacked Bland's account, right? But who can say for sure? After all, there's only one scholarship agreement, and who knows if it's legit or not."
Casting a look at her chat feed, she replied, "Guess we'll find out next year, right? Not that anyone's gonna remember by then. Internet has the memory of a goldfish."
"Found out who it is?" she quipped, and no sooner had the words left her mouth than her chat exploded with one name: Cordelia!
Sweetheart was stunned for a moment before laughing off, "Come on, stop joking. How could it be Cordelia? You guys are just messing with me."
But the name Cordelia kept flooding the chat.
—"Sweetheart, it's really Cordelia!"
—"It's Cordelia!"
—"I can almost feel Sweetheart’s embarrassment!"
—"Same here, suddenly I feel so bad for Sweetheart. It's really Cordelia, the Learner!"
Sweetheart tried to dismiss it, "The more you say it, the more outrageous it gets. Spam Cordelia's name and you're banned from the chat!"
Yet the chat continued unabated, and that's when Sweetheart’s private messages pinged—an alert from her channel moderator: [Sweetheart, no joke, it’s really her!]
Stunned, Sweetheart quickly opened her social media app and searched for the post, and there it was—Cordelia!
Her first reaction was disbelief, "How can there be so many people with the same name?"
The chat was relentless:
—"LOL, I thought it was a common name, too. Plenty of people could be called Cordelia."
But then, the tide in the chat shifted:
—"Everyone, check out Superiority College's official page—they're at it again!"
—"My God! I've never seen a college back a student like this!"
—"It's her! Not just a namesake!"
—"I'm dead! A scholar who can act and game? Suddenly, this chick is fire!"
Sweetheart was flabbergasted.
She hurried to the official page of Superiority College and saw their latest post:
Superiority College official account: "This student has a bright future, and Superiority College awaits you. @Cordelia"
Her live stream chat went nuclear.
Everyone was talking about it.
—"Ahhh, I'm a fan now!"
She blurted out with a huff, "I saw this post going on about some math puzzle she supposedly solved. Like, how can she just claim that with a straight face? These high-society types can probably throw around enough cash to buy achievements like that! It's all for getting a spot at Ivy League U, am I right? That post hit the nail on the head. If she's really all that in math, why doesn't she just keep competing? If she bags one of the top sixty spots in the Mathletes Championship, she'd waltz right into a math program anyway, wouldn't she? Getting all this props early on smells fishy to me. If she's truly badass, why doesn't she just go for the gold in the national Mathletes face-off? Score a legit first place and then talk about fast-tracking!"
She was in the middle of her rant when a gasp suddenly cut through the air.
Taken aback for a second, she looked over to see a pro gamer asking, "What are you doing?"
Sweetheart was stunned. Following the gamer's gaze, she realized that at some point, the webcam had turned on, broadcasting her image live for all to see!
On one side of the screen was the game, but there she was, red-faced and fuming, scrolling through social media on her phone! Who knew how long she'd been caught on camera like that.
The chat exploded instantly!
Comments rocketed through the stream like fireworks.
—"What's the deal here? She's clearly on her phone, not gaming. So, who's playing?"
—"People said she had a smurf before, but to actually see it? Unbelievable!"
—"I must be blind, I never pegged you for this kind of person!"
—"That's it, I'm done. Blacklisted for life. You can't wash this off!"
Gamers are a tight-knit bunch; once they decide to cancel someone, it's game over.
Even if Sweetheart wanted to pivot to an entertainment streamer, it was pretty much a pipe dream now.
She knew she was toast. Dropping her phone in resignation, she spat out, "So what if I had a smurf? I own up to it. But would Cordelia ever admit her math 'talent' is just a sham?!"
