"Are you up?" Dexter's cold voice came from the armchair not far away, at least five or six steps away from her. There was a certain chill in his tone, making her heart feel inexplicably uneasy.
"You're undergoing acupuncture. Don't move," he explained.
Angela understood now. No wonder her entire body felt uncomfortable. Still, this was fine. At least her personal boundaries had been maintained.
"You hate me so much that you'd rather risk harming yourself than…" Dexter's voice trailed off, his words tinged with confusion.
Angela froze for a moment, but she didn't respond. Her silence spoke for itself.
"As for Grandpa, I'll explain everything to him. Don't worry, this kind of thing won't happen again," Dexter said after waiting a while for her answer that never came. Then, he stood and left.
The spacious room quickly fell into silence.
Angela felt a faint sense of loss, but it didn't matter. She told herself there were plenty of fish in the sea; she didn't have anything to fear.
…
"Angie, please come back quickly. Dad's fallen ill. I don't know what he ate or if he was poisoned, but he has been in bad condition for two days. I'm afraid he won't make it, and you're not even around. Come back quickly!" Zack sounded anxious on the phone, which stunned Angela.
Bill was supposed to be in stable condition under the care of the doctor, taking medication as prescribed. So how had things suddenly gotten worse?
With this question in mind, Angela drove herself to the hospital.
Zack was already waiting at the hospital's entrance. When he saw her signature silver Bentley, he excitedly waved his hand.
Bill continued his tirade. "Angela, let me tell you this—even if I die, the company won't be yours. How could I have fathered such a cold-hearted, wicked woman like you?"
"Sorry to burst your bubble, but I'm my mother's daughter. You didn't exactly do much to raise me," Angela retorted, crossing her arms with a sarcastic smile. A glimmer of mockery flickered in her eyes.
At this time, there were a few nurses and doctors at the door. They were watching the show.
Angela realized something and said, "Just look at you! Don't you know your own body's state? Why are you still doing this to yourself?"
Bill's eyes turned cold as he retorted, "Angela, yo-you… Let me go, or else I will…"
Before he could finish speaking, he suddenly coughed up blood and fainted.
