Elodie nodded. “As you can see.”
Watts fell silent, thinking it over. “You realize, of course, that this affects Mr. Silverstein as well. The higher-ups are going to take this seriously. Whether they’ll trust you completely going forward… that’s another matter.”
Of course Elodie had considered that.
This data issue—
It wasn’t just her on the line.
Watts glanced her way, then suddenly asked, “Are things tense between you and Mr. Silverstein? Last time, when you told me about the miscarriage, I couldn’t really tell you were upset. Is it because Mr. Silverstein hurt you badly before, so now you and he…”
Elodie wasn’t surprised people would assume that.
After all, back when Sylvie Fielding was still around, there was none of this affectionate couple image between her and Jarrod.
Plenty of people still doubted their marriage was all that harmonious.
And with Watts’s question now, she could instantly see where this was going.
“You’re wondering if I’m letting my feelings get in the way—using this chance to sabotage Jarrod?” Elodie said it outright.
Watts pressed his lips together. “I know you wouldn’t. But Mr. Silverstein… I’m not so sure about him.”
Elodie had already guessed this much. Anyone who knew how shaky things were between her and Jarrod would be thinking the same thing.
After all, it was one of the rare moments she actually had the opportunity to trip him up.
And she had U.N2 backing her up, plus Charlie’s support down the line—she could always move on to other work.
For Jarrod, though, it wasn’t so simple.
Watts went on, his voice gentle. “If someone like me—an outsider—can have that flicker of doubt, then on Mr. Silverstein’s side, I’m sure he’d wonder, too. Only the two of you know what’s really going on between you. I just wanted to check in. I was worried about you.”
He was just laying out the facts, but Elodie still found herself at a loss for words.
Things had been bad between her and Jarrod lately. The whole ordeal with the baby had left them both wounded, Jarrod especially. His reaction had been extreme.
Would he really think she was out to get him? Who could say what was going on in his head?
