He was gambling on this.
Jarrod knew that joining the national team was an inevitable step for Elodie. Letting things unfold without interference—this was his own inexplicable wager.
Deep down, he still wanted to know if she had any feelings for him.
But her indifference was plain as day.
The old thorn buried in his heart began to ache again.
“You should eat first. We’ll have plenty of time to talk later.” He turned away and opened the takeout box, a quiet gesture of concession.
Elodie thought she’d managed to stay calm today. She no longer felt like arguing with Jarrod; at this point, everything was out in the open. She hoped the school would take her explanation, and maybe Jarrod’s recent actions finally made sense.
Still, there was no reason she should suddenly forget all the pain just because he offered her a little kindness.
“The way you do things gives me chills, Jarrod. You never say anything—you just strike in silence. There’s no going back for us,” Elodie said, her voice steady and quiet, stating a simple fact.
No one wants to be slapped and then handed a piece of candy.
Meeting his eyes, she said, “I’ve started working at the air force base, in the relevant department. Once I’ve settled things there, we can revisit this.”
This issue erupting now was undeniably a headache.
It caught her at a critical juncture.
Left her in limbo.
If things got blown out of proportion, it would spark controversy higher up.
And since her new job was urgent, she couldn’t afford to wait another month to finish paperwork and get everything resubmitted.
She’d already been granted an exception once—she didn’t want to make things any harder for the people above.
