Jareth rushed Thaddeus, his injuries severe and blood loss extensive, to the most top-tier hospital in the capital of Country T.
Jareth was not a man prone to tears, but watching his childhood friend, as pale as a sheet, being wheeled into the emergency room, his heart wrenched. Tears welled up, unbidden, in his eyes, only to be hastily wiped away.
"Mr. Fairhaven."
The sound of a crisp voice behind him made Jareth turn around.
"You are?"
He had a vague impression of the man. It was the same man that Evadne had brought to the upscale wine party at Abernathy Hotel.
"Chasel Bright. You can call me Dr. Bright."
Before he could finish his sentence, Chasel, dressed in surgical scrubs, brushed past Jareth, his voice steady and calm, "Your friend's injuries are in good hands."
"You?! You're a doctor?!" Jareth's eyes widened in surprise, "Weren't you in Elmsworth? How did you end up here?!"
"Cassius called me over."
At the mention of Cassius, the man who both frustrated and intrigued him, Chasel's eyebrows furrowed, his heart pounding, "He didn't tell me the specifics, only that he was undertaking a dangerous task and might need medical assistance. So, I've been waiting here since last night."
With a smug chuckle, Chasel added, "I almost left, but it's a good thing I didn't. Without me, there's no way to help."
Dammit, Cassius!
Even after getting him wrapped around his finger, he still called for his help. Chasel, renowned in the foreign gay community and pursued by countless men, was reduced to a lovesick fool in the face of Cassius, the refined and reserved man.
As Chasel was about to push the doors to the emergency room, Jareth hollered, "Hey! Can I trust you?! My friend's life is in your hands!"
Without turning around, Chasel simply replied, "Hmph, Dr. Eve isn't the only skilled doctor in the world."
Elsewhere.
Tonight's operation had crushed the arms dealer on Star Island, effectively angering the big players in Country T.
Although Ward was captured, the news had already reached the local military and police, trapping them within the country and preventing them from returning to Elmsworth.
Moreover, there was no extradition agreement between Country T and their homeland, making it impossible for Aaron to get help.
The situation was becoming increasingly dire!
Seeing that they couldn't return to Elmsworth for the time being, Evadne decided to keep vigil over Thaddeus at the hospital after leaving Star Island.
Elvis was keeping a tight watch on Ward in one car, while Evadne and Cassius were in another.
On the way, Evadne clutched Cassius's hand tightly. He placed her cold hand over his warm heart, his gaze filled with worry as he looked at her pale face.
"Evadne," Cassius called her name softly.
She looked up, her swollen eyes brimming with tears as she stared blankly at him.
It felt as though her soul had left her body to be with Thaddeus, leaving behind an empty shell.
Cassius sighed, unbuttoning his shirt to remove his silver cross necklace that he'd worn for many years.
"When Thaddeus wakes up, give this to him."
Placing the necklace in her hands, Cassius closed her fingers around it.
"Cassius, this is?" Evadne's eyes widened in surprise.
"This necklace isn't worth much money, but it means a lot to me. I've worn it for over a decade, and it's always protected me in times of danger. Right now, all I can do is pray and hope that Thaddeus is strong enough to pull through."
As Evadne started crying once more, Cassius comforted her, "Don't cry, Evadne. Once Thaddeus wakes up, treat him well. At least, don't cause him any more trouble."
The Ashbourne family arrived at the hospital, entering the underground car park where Jareth was already waiting.
As Evadne stepped out of the car, she ran towards Jareth, her eyes wide with anxiety, "How's Thaddeus?!"
Jareth replied, "He's in surgery now, being operated on by someone you know."
"Do you mean Chasel?" Evadne's mind was as sharp as a blade, cutting through the vague insinuations.
She turned to look at Cassius.
Cassius met her gaze calmly, his eyes a well of unreadable thoughts.
"Yeah, he's been in there for almost three hours."
Jareth's worry was clear in his voice, he couldn’t help but ramble on, “Evadne, I heard that Dr. Bright is a relative of Suri, can we really trust him? He seems so nonchalant and carefree, like a young man who spends his days playing video games. If he's not up to the task, maybe you should take over. Didn't you do Thad’s operation?”
Evadne’s silence was deafening.
"Playing video games, really?"
Elvis took a drag from his cigarette, resting his muscular arm on the car window, "Your Fairhaven family education seems to be failing."
“Whatever, as long as you get the point,” Jareth mumbled, not wanting to argue with Evadne's elder brother.
"Dr. Bright's medical skills are not inferior to Dr. Eve's."
Cassius's words, cold as ice, cut through the tension, "As a member of the illustrious Fairhaven family, Mr. Fairhaven, you should understand that there's always someone better out there, right?"
Evadne and Elvis exchanged looks.
Was Cassius defending Chasel?
Jareth, being the eldest grandson of Barry Fairhaven, was used to a life of luxury and privilege. He didn't usually pay attention to the subtleties of conversation.
Ward, listening to the conversation outside, couldn't help but smirk.
“Laugh? Laugh at this!”
Elvis landed a punch on Ward's face, causing him to bleed profusely from the nose.
“The one who should be rotting in jail is your 'hostage',” Evadne said, her eyes filled with hatred. “Ward has been smuggling weapons and drugs in your country, committing all kinds of crimes. Instead of arresting him, you're aiding and abetting him. And you dare to talk about justice and strict laws?”
Jareth blinked, “Damn, that's well said! Keep going!”
The official was fuming, his eyes round with anger.
"But what Ward does in your country is none of my business. All I can do is sympathize with your citizens, who have to live in such a corrupt society," Evadne added with a cold smile.
Evadne clenched her fists in fury. "But he killed an innocent girl in my country. He has to come back with me and face the music. An eye for an eye! I don't care whose lapdog he is, or who's pulling his strings. I have to take Ward back, dead or alive!"
The General's eyes were blazing with anger. "This man is one of ours, from Country T. It's up to our law enforcement to arrest and interrogate him! Even if he has to serve time, it'll be on our turf. You're not cops, you have no right to lay a finger on him! And another thing, you've killed several of our island residents in Star Island. According to our laws, you should all be hanged! You're dreaming if you think you can just take someone. Get them!"
At the General's command, several police officers rushed forward, handcuffs in hand, ready to arrest them all.
Cassius and Jareth immediately reacted, stepping in front of Evadne without hesitation.
Meanwhile, Elvis, who was sitting in the car watching Ward, had a stern look in his eyes. He had a gun in his hand, ready to rush out to protect his sister and brother at any moment.
As soon as one of the police officers reached for Cassius, Cassius snorted coldly and suddenly grabbed his wrist, then flung him over.
The police officer didn't even have time to react before he was thrown into the air like he'd slipped on a banana peel. He landed heavily on the ground, his arm dislocated, and his coccyx fractured!
"Damn, that was cool!" Jareth's eyes were wide with admiration.
When he got back to Elmsworth safely, he was definitely going to ask President Ashbourne how to master that move.
"You! You dare to attack the police?!"
The General was shocked and furious. After all, assaulting a police officer was a serious crime in any country. He roared, "Everyone, get them! No matter what it takes, we have to take them into custody! Go!"
"Yes, sir!"
The situation was about to spiral out of control as everyone rushed forward.
Evadne's fierce eyes were bloodshot, a raging fire burning in her chest. She was ready to cause a ruckus.
Beep—beep, beep—!
Suddenly, the sound of a car horn echoed through the parking lot.
The chaotic scene paused, even Evadne and Cassius were confused.
In the dim light, a top-of-the-range limo, with a silver roof and black body, slowly approached.
