Chapter 41
Adam slammed the door open as he entered the police station, his footsteps heavy with frustration.
His eyes scanned the room quickly before he made his way to the front desk. The officer behind the counter barely looked up, but when he did, his gaze was full of curiosity.
“I need to report a missing person,” Adam said, his voice tinged with urgency. “My ex-wife is missing.”
The officer looked at him for a moment, raising an eyebrow. “And you’re just coming to report this now?”
Adam clenched his jaw. “I’ve been looking for her myself. I think I know who took her. I have a suspect.”
The officer motioned for him to sit down. “Alright, what’s the name of this suspect? We’ll need an address to get started.”
Adam froze. He didn’t have Alex’s address. He never did. Sophie had always kept her personal life with Alex separate from the rest of their world. Adam shifted uncomfortably on the seat, not sure how to proceed.
“I… I don’t have an address,” Adam admitted, his voice betraying his discomfort. “But I’m sure it’s him.”
The officers exchanged skeptical glances, clearly not buying it. One of them, a tall man with a scruffy beard, leaned forward.
“Wait a minute,” the officer said, narrowing his eyes. “I’ve seen your face on TV before. You’re the guy who had an affair with your secretary, right?” He grinned, clearly enjoying Adam’s discomfort.
The other officers burst into laughter, some snickering, others outright laughing.
Adam’s face flushed with embarrassment. He had no intention of being the subject of their mockery, but here he was, caught in their jokes.
“Yeah, I get it,” Adam muttered, his face heating. “I’m that guy, alright?”
The laughter didn’t stop, and Adam’s patience snapped. His fists clenched, but he did his best to remain calm.
He didn’t have time for their petty taunts. Sophie’s life was at risk, and he couldn’t afford to get sidetracked by their jokes.
“Look, I’m wasting time here,” he snapped, standing up abruptly. “I came for help, not to be ridiculed. I’ll find my own answers.”
Without waiting for a response, Adam turned on his heel and stormed out of the station, ignoring the mocking chuckles behind him.
As soon as he stepped outside, he reached for his phone, dialing the number he knew would get results.
“Got it, boss. I’ll ensure it’s done.”
And just like that, the line went dead.
Adam stared at his phone for a moment, letting the silence settle in. He was relying on this man to get the answers he needed. Sophie’s life depended on it.
His thoughts turned to Alex. He had to find Sophie, and he had to make sure Alex paid for whatever part he had in this mess.
The idea of Sophie being in danger, possibly hurt… It made Adam’s blood boil. He couldn’t stand the thought of anyone harming her, especially Alex, who had always seemed to have his own plans for her. Adam clenched his fists tighter.
He knew he couldn’t trust the police anymore. Not after the ridicule he’d faced in there. If he wanted answers, he’d have to take matters into his own hands.
With his mind made up, Adam turned away from the wall, his determination hardening.
Tomorrow would be the day he would find Sophie. He had no idea where Alex lived, but that wouldn’t stop him. He would find a way. He would track Sophie down, and he would make sure she was safe. Whatever it took.
Sophie was the only thing that mattered now.
