Meanwhile, Benjamin had also found out from another Special Security Agent that Reuben had led the raid. At the same time, he wasn't surprised that the mastermind had escaped.
After all, if the true mastermind behind Ghost Mist was really the person he suspected, just relying on Reuben alone might not be enough to defeat them.
With this thought in mind, his gaze subconsciously drifted toward Shannon.
Though he hadn't been paying close attention, the sound of Shannon speaking with the girl named Lexie still reached his ears. It seemed she had heard the news, too.
Thinking about her earlier attempt to avoid him, Benjamin paused for a moment. After some deliberation, he decided to walk over to her.
"The Ghost Mist HQ has been raided. Though the true mastermind has escaped, they won't strike anytime soon." For once, Benjamin was explaining himself to others. His tone was rather stiff.
He paused, looked at Shannon, and softened his voice. "You don't have to worry about them on my back anymore."
She finally looked up to meet his eyes. "What are you trying to say?"
Should she stop clinging to him now because the threats from Ghost Mist weren't a concern anymore?
Benjamin couldn't tell how she felt from her eyes. He pondered briefly and explained, "What I'm trying to say is I'm not as helpless as you think. As the Dragon Vein, I always have ways to protect myself at any given moment."
As if to prove the validity of his words, he removed the Core Vein Stone hanging around his neck. "As I said, this stone is the half of my heart. I'll be safe as long as it exists."
Even if he used all the golden light to break the divinity-cultivating array and fell into a deep sleep, he could still rely on this stone to return as long as the Core Vein Stone remained intact.
That was one of the reasons why Benjamin left her behind alone.
Benjamin never cared to explain his actions to others, but seeing Shannon's angry expression, he felt he should explain himself.
In his memory, she had always been rational and calm, and he believed she would understand.
Handing the Core Vein Stone to her, he gazed at her and spoke with his deep yet melodious voice. "I'm fine now, so I am returning it to you for safekeeping."
Shannon raised her gaze to him, her eyes filled with emotions he couldn't understand. Just as he had said, she had always been composed, rational, and clear-headed.
After learning about the raid operation, she finally understood Benjamin's intention. She might understand him, but it didn't mean she accepted the outcome.
In fact, she understood every word he said and every decision he made. But the more she did, the more she realized what type of existence she was in his eyes.
To him, she and Kai were synonymous with other insignificant existences in the world. Because they were insignificant, he could leave or disappear without explaining anything to her.
To add salt to the wound, she was never in any of his plans.
His ways weren't wrong; he was simply the wrong person. He hadn't been the same Benjamin for a long time, something he constantly reminded her of. Yet, she innocently believed she could find the old him.
As a matter of fact, she had been too hopeful.
"No specific reason." Her voice came out softly.
