No one else could see it, but Shannon could.
She witnessed that as Benjamin's golden light seeped into Coralie's body, the black putrefaction tangled deep within her flesh, and the supernatural energy was purified bit by bit.
Nearby, Avery and Elliot, who'd been intensely focused on treating her, both felt the weight ease. The wounds they healed with white light began to close.
After a while, Coralie's condition visibly improved, though she had yet to fully recover.
Perhaps because her body finally felt lighter, she stirred awake in bed. The moment she opened her eyes and saw Verus standing not far away, tears welled up instantly.
Her voice carried a trace of grievance as she called out, "Verus…"
Crystal-clear tears slipped from her eyes and fell onto her shoulders. But instead of dispersing, they solidified into pearls.
It was Shannon's first time witnessing an oceanid's tears turn into pearls, and she subconsciously watched a little longer.
Benjamin followed her gaze, and his eyes flickered toward the pearls by the bedside. But he glanced at it for just a second before looking away.
With Coralie out of immediate danger, Verus broke down in tears. Gone was the glamorous idol from before, but he probably didn't care about that now.
Shannon let out a silent breath of relief, but her expression soon turned grave again. Something was very wrong with Coralie's condition.
Her gaze shifted from Coralie to the two others who'd arrived with her. The two were the same age as Coralie, and though they remained silent the entire time, their worried eyes gave them away.
They were fully covered, but Shannon could sense the putrefied supernatural energy seeping from them.
Elliot noticed them too. Seeing that Coralie's condition had stabilized, he prepared to treat them next.
Avery, who'd just been about to take a break, saw Elliot moving toward them. She grumbled, "Take her somewhere else. Treat the two later."
But neither he nor Brinea were as severely affected as Coraline.
"It started months ago when we noticed diseased fish appearing in our waters. Then, gradually, some of our people started showing the same symptoms, and they were mostly the young demons.
"Their scales would change, and they'd start itching, discoloring until they slowly fade and fall off…"
The sick little oceanids would experience unstable supernatural energy. Sometimes, their eyes would turn red, and they'd become violent.
The clan tried everything to contain it, but nothing worked. Later, the older generations started showing symptoms too. That was when they finally realized something was wrong with their waters.
A few days ago, the clan had begun discussions about leaving their homeland, but nothing had been finalized.
Unlike other demons, the oceanid clan preferred seclusion and rarely interacted with demon clans on land.
