At that thought, Shannon shot a quizzical look at Benjamin. He didn't abruptly take off because he was shy, did he?
That possibility took her aback. Before she could delve deeper, Benjamin quickly averted his gaze and turned around, leaving with quick steps.
For some reason, the way he left resembled his departure last night. Shannon's eyes slowly lit up at his retreating figure as though realizing something.
Scott was shocked to see him leave like that. What was going on with Benjamin? If he wasn't mad as he claimed, the least he could do was to explain his actions last night!
Scott parted his lips, ready to stop him, but Hector held him back. "That's enough."
This time, Hector wore a rare yet gentle smile. He and his sister had always been too rational and composed about most things in life; sometimes, Scott's recklessness was just what was needed to get to the heart of the matter.
It was a good thing he brought him on this trip.
…
Now that Shannon knew her family was there for her, she couldn't just drive them away. After seeking their opinions, she and Kai brought them to the Demon District and her current residence.
Though it was Scott's first time there, he had heard quite a lot about Demon District. He was nervous yet excited as he entered the district, speculating about the type of demon each person he passed on the street might be.
Of course, he kept his curiosity to himself and didn't offend any demons by directly asking them about their true forms. He might be known for his recklessness, but he would never bring trouble upon Shannon.
Shannon listened to Scott and Kai's chatter along the way, while Hank, the restrained one, merely listened from the sidelines.
Shannon looked at Hector, unsurprised by his unconditional support. He had always been this unquestioning when it came to protecting and defending her.
She believed in him, so she hoped he could believe in her, too.
"Things between me and Benjamin aren't as bad as you guys think. So, don't worry about me. As for the unfairness you speak of…"
Shannon looked up to see the canopy of the maple tree, her voice soft. "My feelings for him have nothing to do with fairness."
Beneath the maple tree, her voice rang out clearly before the Jensens. At the same time, it danced through the rustling leaves and reached Benjamin's ears, who stood beneath the canopy.
