Shannon watched as the golden light faded into nothingness with a calm and unreadable expression. She glanced at Kai and said, "No rush."
Benjamin had no interest in sitting down for dinner with them right now. The putrefied supernatural energy surrounding Onyx had yet to be fully investigated, and he needed her help. She was in no hurry.
Kai, on the other hand, was practically dying of anxiety. He was about to say something when he suddenly sensed an approaching presence.
Turning around, he saw that the female doctor from earlier had somehow slipped closer to them and was staring at Shannon. "You're Reuben's… niece?"
Shannon turned to look at her. She sensed no hostility from the woman's eyes and calmly introduced herself, "Shannon Jensen."
The woman curled her lips into a smirk and introduced herself as well. "Avery Hunter."
Then, with a glint of gossip in her eyes, she asked, "What's your relationship with The Enigma?"
Instead of answering, Shannon turned the question back on her. "And what's your relationship with Reuben?"
Hearing that, Avery arched an eyebrow and studied Shannon for some time. Then, she suddenly laughed. "Just as Reuben said, you're a mischievous one."
Shannon was utterly baffled. Mischievous? Where did that description come from?
For a second, she recalled the first time she met Marilyn and the way the latter looked at her as if she were some troublesome brat.
Shannon was starting to suspect Reuben had been secretly ruining her reputation behind her back.
Luckily, Avery didn't seem interested in continuing the small talk. After learning that another demon patient had arrived, she gave Shannon a casual nod and left.
Shannon didn't leave immediately, either. If her and Benjamin's guesses were correct, she had to stay here and keep watch until the Demon Control Agency assigned official protection for Onyx.
In Crisea's laws, ordinary pet trafficking would result in light penalties if caught. But if the case involved the abduction of demon younglings, the Demon Control Agency had full authority to intervene on behalf of the demon clan.
The human police wouldn't hand the criminals over to be dealt with by the demons, but to maintain good relations with the demons, they would treat the case as a child kidnapping and issue the harshest punishment possible.
Of course, Shannon would have reported it as an agent of the Demon Control Agency, but it was more legitimate to have the guardian of an actual victim file the claim.
Sure enough, the Demon Control Agency immediately applied pressure once the cat demon mommy filed the report.
Not only did the human police severely punish the pet traffickers, but they also linked the two groups of traffickers together under the case.
As a result, the Demon Control Agency was granted full authority to take over the warehouse heart-removal murder case.
Shannon monitored the handling of the criminals, and just as the case was being wrapped up, Onyx finally woke up from unconsciousness.
