At Demon Clinic in Jamborough, Benjamin brought Shannon over, just in time to see Kai handing over the injured Onyx to demon doctors at the clinic for treatment.
The demon clan had a unique physique, and demons didn't get sick as easily as humans. Even if they were injured, they recovered much faster.
As a result, Jamborough didn't have dedicated demon hospitals for the demon clan, but there were independent demon-run clinics specializing in medical treatment.
The clinic was located on the border of the Demon District and the human territory, though it was rare for humans to accidentally wander in.
Shannon was familiar with the clinic but didn't know much about the demon behind it. Rumors had it that the demon doctor here had close ties to Reuben.
When Benjamin and Shannon entered, they saw Kai sitting against the wall outside the treatment room with an orange kitten perched on his head. Both of them looked rather dejected.
Seeing the two approached, Kai immediately perked up. With the orange kitten still on his head, he stood up and called out, "Shannon!"
Then, his gaze shifted to Benjamin, and his eyes turned slightly red. His voice carried an undeniable hint of grievance as he murmured, "Ben…"
Benjamin knew Kai and was well aware the latter had initially stayed by his side in hopes of gaining a chance to transform into a dragon. He wasn't too concerned about how Kai addressed him.
Noticing the flicker of disappointment in Kai's eyes, Shannon distracted him and asked, "How's the puppy demon doing?"
Kai replied, "He's still in there. They're trying to save him. Though they said it's serious, he should survive."
He told the truth, but as soon as he finished, the orange kitten on his head let out a wailing sound and burst into tears again.
In a flash, the orange kitten transformed back into a toddler. His demon features such as his ears and tail remained visible, but no one there minded.
"It's all my fault… I'm the reason Onyx got into all this mess…"
That was how the two demon younglings secretly followed the traffickers to the outskirts of Jamborough and found a truck of stolen pets. What happened next was what Tanger had told Shannon.
To protect Tanger, Onyx revealed himself as a demon. That was when the traffickers used Tanger and the captured animals as leverage against Onyx and took him away separately.
After hearing the full story, Shannon wasn't surprised by the kids' actions, but she still hadn't gotten an answer about Onyx's strange condition.
"If Onyx was completely normal before that, his putrefied supernatural energy must've come from whatever happened after he was taken."
She turned to Benjamin and asked, "Could there be something off about those people?"
Benjamin answered, "They were just ordinary humans." They were not demons, so there hadn't been any signs of putrefaction.
Hearing that, Shannon's eyes darkened slightly.
