Shannon hesitated briefly before stepping forward.
From the way Marilyn had used her fox tail to drag Thalia away, it was clear that was the former's true speed.
With such speed, there was no way Shannon's wind blade could've casually chopped off the fox fur.
She recalled the fox fur she'd picked up earlier. The root was neatly intact, and instead of looking like it'd been cut off, it seemed more like Marilyn had shed it on purpose.
It meant everything had simply been an excuse to take Thalia away. And from the mirage-like illusion, they were clearly targeting her from the beginning.
She might as well enter alone since the person inside wanted her to do so.
She thought she'd see a scene similar to when she returned to the Jensens, but to her surprise, only Reuben was in the main hall of the grand royal palace.
Despite being just one demon, Shannon felt like a dozen pairs of eyes were watching her, yet she couldn't sense where the gazes came from.
Her gaze shifted toward the seat behind Reuben, where a snow-white-fox-fur-covered chair was. Someone seemed to be sitting there, but she couldn't see anyone except Reuben.
"Shannon, you did not disappoint me." Reuben looked at her. His expression was calm, but within that calmness was an unexpected gentleness.
"I know why you came, so I've arranged everything for you. From today onward, you're officially part of the clan."
With that, a soft bell chime rang from Shannon's wrist. It was the bell Reuben had entrusted Yvette to give Shannon on the latter's birthday; the exact same bell Thalia also had.
According to Thalia, every member of the Wynthorpe family had one.
As her wristbell swayed, she heard an answering chime from outside. Shannon instinctively turned toward the sound.
"The bell then splits in two. One remains on the Soul Tree, and the other is given to the owner of the bell as a representation of oneself."
Shannon stared at the Soul Tree, and a strange yet familiar sense of connection flooded her soul.
She listened as the bells chimed in harmony. For a long while, she couldn't help but ask, "When will they stop ringing?"
They sounded pleasant, but after hearing them for so long, they were starting to get annoying.
Reuben was momentarily stunned. Then as if a thought crossed his mind, his eyes narrowed slightly and flashed with a glint of mischief.
"Send a wisp of your supernatural power into the bell on the Soul Tree, and it'll stop ringing."
