"That's Thalia! Thalia Wynthorpe!"
Hector's mind buzzed, and at that moment, he finally understood that the mentor Shannon had been searching for all this time was their mother.
It meant that the person Shannon planned to bring back, the one who might be stranded in the alternate world, was their mother.
With a crack, the sound of a phone screen shattering echoed beside him.
Hector turned to see the usually stoic and composed Adam with taut muscles and trembling eyes. He'd clearly grasped what Hector had realized as well.
A single thought was left in his mind. His wife, Thalia, was still alive.
…
In the alternate world, the very much alive Celeste, who preferred going by her real name, was sitting in a small alley breakfast shop with Shannon. She was sipping on some milk and munching on a bagel with cream cheese.
"Most of the bagels in the alternate world are pre-frozen products, but this shop is an old gem I found after much searching. Their milk is fresh, and the bagels are handmade. I remember these are your favorites."
Thalia sounded like an experienced foodie eager to share her culinary discoveries.
Her knowledge of Shannon's favorite foods came from her time as the latter's mentor. However, her interactions with Shannon as a mentor and mother were different.
As a mother, she wanted to do simple and heartwarming things with Shannon, including things she could treasure as fond memories of their time together.
Shannon dismissed it as Thalia's way of reclaiming her identity as a mother.
Though her mind was occupied with finding Fennec and the Unmelting Bone, she patiently accompanied Thalia across half the city for breakfast.
After they both finished their milk, Shannon brought up the events of the previous evening.
The night before, Thalia had gotten the restaurant manager to throw Caleb and Cecily out with just a simple text. Shannon hadn't asked much then, but watching how Thalia had seamlessly integrated into this world, she couldn't help but ask.
In her mind, becoming overly integrated into a world could become dangerous as it might make leaving it impossible.
The thought brought a fleeting sense of unease to Shannon's heart. She decided to search for Fennec and the Unmelting Bone immediately.
The sooner she found them, the sooner they could leave the alternate world.
Just as she was about to voice her thoughts, the sky above suddenly darkened.
She instinctively looked up and noticed that the sky was veiled by a layer of smoke that felt strangely familiar.
"It's the black smoke!" Before she could react further, Thalia grasped her arm firmly.
Then, she cursed irritatedly under her breath, "Ugh, that annoying unkillable bastard is here again!"
