The system once said two completely identical individuals could never exist in the alternate world unless the other person wasn't human.
Considering Reuben had admitted to being connected to Thalia, Shannon concluded that Thalia and Reuben were both demons.
But she hadn't forgotten that she'd first sought out Reuben because she suspected some connection to the mother she'd never met since birth.
Shannon had always had her guesses, and that conjecture was finally confirmed when she met her "mother" in person.
Though the two looked nothing alike, their behavior and mannerisms bore undeniable similarities.
She didn't believe in coincidences. Too many coincidences either meant the other person was intentionally acting that way to mislead her, or they were the same person.
"I'm Shannon." Shannon earnestly stated her name as she stared at Celeste, who had fallen abruptly silent.
Celeste met her stubborn gaze, which bore a striking resemblance to her own. After a long pause, she softly muttered, "I know."
She'd been caught between continuing to feign ignorance and admitting the truth, but she ultimately chose the latter. It was clear Shannon knew part of the truth since she'd asked such pointed questions.
Celeste looked at Shannon, and there was a tinge of helplessness in her tone as she asked, "How did you end up here?"
"I told you, I'm here looking for you," Shannon replied.
Though she'd long had her guesses, hearing the confirmation from Celeste stirred up an indescribable emotion in her heart.
There was confusion, frustration, and anger mixed in… along with a faint trace of indescribable grievance.
"Why did you pretend to be someone else to stay by my side?
"Why did you disappear after pretending to be Ms. Wynthorpe?
"Why didn't you acknowledge that I'm your… daughter?"
After leaving Fennec's body and returning to the alternate world, Celeste thought she'd never have the chance to see Shannon again.
Shannon stood stiffly and allowed Celeste to hold her. As she listened to the sorrowful sobs ringing in her ears, her eyes began to tear up.
She lowered her gaze and let silent tears slide down her cheeks.
…
Half an hour later, Shannon sat on the couch and watched as her mother, Celeste, clung to her arm while sniffling.
She handed her the last napkin from the box and said with a sigh, "Stop crying already."
"But I… I feel awful."
Celeste clutched Shannon's arm tightly and wiped her tears as she sniffled. "I thought I'd never get to see you again."
