Benjamin's golden light had restored itself.
Once the realization hit Shannon, she abruptly pulled away from Benjamin and ignored the moment of closeness they'd just shared. She took a step back and scrutinized the changes in his golden light.
The golden light wasn't as radiant as it'd first been, but it'd regained much of its brilliance. The most direct evidence was that she was starting to have trouble seeing his face clearly again.
"So, I'm the key to its restoration?"
Shannon didn't believe Benjamin would casually experiment with his golden light for no reason. There had to be some indication.
Soon, she was reminded of the first time his golden light had dimmed. It'd been a situation similar to the current one. He'd suddenly hugged her, and the light had brightened slightly afterward.
She hadn't thought much of it back then, but now, she started mulling it over.
Benjamin observed her focus on the golden light and felt a wave of helplessness. Then, he said, "This marriage contract is probably one of the main reasons."
As he spoke, he opened his palm to reveal the red mark glowing brighter than ever.
Shannon followed suit by opening her hand. The red mark in her palm mirrored his and was just as vivid.
If that were the case, she had a general idea of what was happening.
Marriage contracts were meant to connect a pair, not to mention how the ink of their red mark came from flowers from a thousand-year hazel.
She'd wondered if her ability to siphon away his golden light stemmed from the connection of the red mark. And now, it seemed that not only could she "draw" spiritual energy from him, but he could too.
She met his gaze and responded with actions. For the first time ever, she initiated a hug, just as he'd done for her.
Benjamin seemed caught off guard, and his body stiffened slightly. But that was just for a moment.
The golden light around him gradually spread and encircled them both little by little. Soon after, it enveloped them entirely.
…
As the group boarded the private jet the next day, Lexie glanced at Shannon and Benjamin sitting side by side. There was clear curiosity on her doll-like face.
"Something feels… different about you two after just one night."
