When Heston teleported into a filthy alley following Cassidy's faint presence, he saw her pinned to the ground.
A man's hand was clamped tightly over her mouth, and his other hand pulled at her new dress.
A flash of scarlet flared in Heston's eyes as filth energy erupted around him. He darted forward and delivered a brutal kick to the man.
The man had no time to react. As he was sent flying, the sickening sound of bones echoed through the alley. He crashed into the wall with blood pouring from his nose and mouth.
Heston's blood-red eyes remained fixed on the man. He was about to advance when Cassidy scrambled to her feet and grabbed his leg. "Mister!"
Her face was bruised, and her carefully braided hair was in disarray. But despite her terror, she was unharmed. She'd known Heston would come to save her.
As her touch warmed Heston, the scarlet in his eyes slowly receded. He glanced at the man who lay coughing blood by the wall then at the frightened Cassidy clutching his leg.
Bending down, he scooped Cassidy into his arms. A second later, the two vanished from the alley in a blur of movement.
…
Just as Shannon and Benjamin arrived, they caught a glimpse of Heston disappearing with Cassidy.
Turning around, their attention was drawn to the dying man crumpled against the wall. Shannon's face turned icy as she read his face.
Though she was deeply disgusted, she forced herself to act rationally. She sent a talisman shooting toward the man with a flick of her wrist, and it bound his dissipating soul to his body.
If his soul scattered, the man would die on the spot. He did deserve death, but Shannon knew he couldn't die just yet. If he died now, it'd confirm that the Unmelting Bone had killed him.
The Unmelting Bone had done nothing wrong to deserve such a stain on his name. More importantly, he'd hardly be accepted back into normal society if he killed someone.
"Why won't you let him die when the Unmelting Bone has killed him? The way you're binding his soul violates the regulations."
By binding his soul and not healing the body, the man was trapped in a liminal state. He was fully aware of the suffering but was unable to die. In such instances, he was better off dead.
Benjamin cast the young officer a cold glance and snapped, "What regulation are you referring to?"
Though spoken lightly, the weight of his authority was palpable. The officer failed to retort as though a hand was strangling his throat.
The chief of Arenvale Security Branch Agency immediately reprimanded the officer, "The higher-ups are handling this. Watch your mouth!"
Though the lower-level staff might not understand, he had a vague idea of Benjamin's identity. Plus, he'd read the man's face, and anyone who would harm children like this deserved every bit of suffering they endured.
Though silenced, the young officer was silently resentful. The man deserved basic human rights even if he was vile.
