Nightfall descended.
The city's nightlife was just as lively, if not more so, than during the day. Yet, in some of the quieter alleys on the outskirts of the city, an eerie silence prevailed.
Heston, also known as Hexspawn or the Unmelting Bone, had reduced his once-plump form, with flesh that once filled his body, to a withered, horrifying state, due to hunger.
He didn't want anyone to see his current state. Thus, taking advantage of the night, he slipped into the secluded alley and quickly caught a passing rat, devouring its flesh and blood.
His body regained some plumpness, but it wasn't enough. Just as he prepared to catch another rat to sate his bloodlust, he sensed something and turned his head toward the mouth of the alley.
Those cold, sharp eyes, filled with malice, suddenly softened when they landed on the figure standing at the mouth of the alley.
There, standing at the opening, was a young girl, about three feet tall. Her braids were slightly messy, and her coat looked worn. Her eyes, however, shone brightly in the darkness and locked onto him without hesitation.
Heston withdrew his gaze and swiftly turned around to leave. However, before he could take more than two steps, he heard a faint sound of footsteps from behind.
He turned his head, only to see the girl had approached him at some point. While raising her head, she wore a look so numb that was unlike the girl her age—so pure and fearless—should have.
Heston's appearance wasn't exactly pleasant at that moment. In fact, any discerning person could tell he wasn't normal. Yet, the little girl showed no sign of fear.
He waved his hand stiffly at her, signaling for her to leave. However, as he lifted his leg to walk again, the footsteps behind him followed once more.
He halted his steps, quickly turned around, and flashed a fierce look at her.
To his surprise, the girl stiffened ever-so-slightly, then continued to gaze at him, her expression unchanged. She parted her lips and, to his astonishment, asked, "Mister, are you also an evil spirit?"
"I don't eat… children." It was his way of telling her not to follow him. "Go home… now."
Yet, she stared fixedly at him. "But… I don't have a home."
After her parents and grandmother died, a female officer from the Special Security Agency brought her to Arenvale, her mother's hometown, and entrusted her to her uncle.
However, her aunt disliked her, saying her demeanor was too gloomy and frightening. Therefore, her uncle and aunt fought every day.
Cassidy thought both the arrangement and life itself were pointless. It would've been better if she had been gobbled up.
Heston felt that the little girl before him differed from the children he had seen laughing and playing in the square earlier that day.
