Heiress Unmasked: Shaking the World With Geomancy novel Chapter 1208

The crowd turned to see the disheveled Maya staggering toward them.

When she spotted Warren among the group, she steadied herself and said, "Earlier we were all trapped within the barrier and couldn't deal with the ghouls.

"I thought we could temporarily deactivate the barrier so the people could escape, and we'd seal it again…"

She gritted her teeth and continued, "If we'd known the elders would be here and mystic masters were coming to assist, we would've held out a little longer."

She'd fled a short distance before encountering reinforcements from the mystic masters. Her earlier decision had been impulsive, but she'd thought of seeking help after leaving. So, she immediately returned upon realizing assistance had arrived.

Though her expression showed guilt, it didn't seem like she meant it. Perhaps she'd make the same choice if given the chance to redo it.

Mike exploded with fury after listening to her explanation. "Bullshit! Don't you know that once the barrier is broken, it can't be easily reactivated? You try to make it sound so noble when you were just selfish and scared, and you wanted to drag everyone else with you!

"Who's this 'we' you keep talking about? It was you! You used that damned flag of yours to control me into opening the barrier!"

Mike rarely lashed out so harshly, especially at women. He was so enraged that he even seemed ready to kick her.

Those around him held him back, and Warren's voice rang out sharp and commanding. "Enough!"

The area fell silent for a moment. Skylar cast him a cold gaze and snapped, "Mike has made it clear enough. Are you still trying to defend her?"

Warren met Skylar's icy unfamiliar stare, and a feeling that he might actually lose his son overtook him.

Maya stepped forward and said, "Skylar, don't be so quick to judge me."

"I know better than anyone what this flag is capable of… I gave this to you so you could protect yourself, but you used it to betray your peers and nearly caused a catastrophe!"

Maya's eyes widened slightly at the sight of the flag, and a flicker of panic crossed her face before she quickly regained composure. "I was running out of spiritual energy. Was it wrong for me to want to save myself?"

"Even if you wanted to save yourself, who gave you the right to release the ghouls?" Shannon chimed in with a cold voice. Her eyes were filled with icy disdain.

"I'm sure you understand what the consequences are, and any mystic master who could actually think would know. If you wanted to survive, you could've set up a barrier in a house and waited for rescue.

"But no, you chose the option most likely to harm the world. No matter how you put it, you're just selfish and dumb."

Shannon's words struck a nerve, and Maya's facade began to crack. She nearly broke down as she shouted, "I'm selfish… So what if I am? Who isn't? Doesn't everyone in this world act out of self-interest!"
