Trevor widened his eyes at Shannon, seemingly confused by her words.
She pointed at the entrance. "Your family has stone gargoyles at the door. Usually, that would stop ghosts or evil spirits from entering.
"However, the ghost couple moved in and out of the house without getting stopped. That means the owner of the house—in this case, you—had invited them in."
Indeed, some supernatural beings had the ability to grant human wishes, one of them being the ghost deity. In this case, Shannon deduced Trevor had accidentally made a wish to a nearby ghost deity.
Seeing how neither Shannon nor Benjamin launched any attacks upon entering, the ghost couple knew they were reasonable people.
As such, they explained, "A week ago, at night, this kid's parents were having a heated argument. Out of fear, he ran out of the house."
He didn't run far away. Instead, he'd arrived at a spot where his mother would usually pray and said his request. At that time, he wished his parents would stop fighting and wanted parents who would care about him.
Then, he unwittingly summoned the ghost couple. Perhaps children had much purer minds than adults, so their wishes quickly reached the ears of the ghost deity.
After understanding the lore, Shannon told Trevor, "Since you're the one who invited them, you have to make them leave with your words."
Of course, she could easily drive them out by force, but that was unnecessary. Once confirmed that Trevor understood her meaning, she brought them to the family's private altar space.
Trevor followed Shannon's instructions by standing before the altar and solemnly expressing his gratitude. Then, he sent them away. "Thank you, you two. I'm fine now. You can leave."
Immediately, the ghost couple released their possession of Trevor's parents. Before leaving, they bowed their heads at Shannon and Benjamin and vanished.
Shannon performed another incantation, dispelling the lingering negative energy that had attached itself to Trevor's parents during their possession. The couple soon groggily woke up.
He looked at her anticipated gaze with a tinge of gentleness and nodded. "Yeah, I feel it."
The fingers hanging by his side flicked slightly, and the faint meritorious energy returned to Shannon.
…
The couple spent their leisure time, while Hank crouched in the garden at the Jensen residence, poking at the slow-moving Tortoise the System.
He glanced occasionally at the gate, looking gloomy. "It's getting dark soon. Why isn't Shanon home yet?"
The raw stone thief still awaited them…
