How ironic.
When Janel had been admitted to the university, her parents had the idea of having her younger brother who'd dropped out of high school take her place. He was a year younger than her.
But fortunately, cases of fraudulent university admissions had drawn national attention. Such regulations from the government prevented her parents from pursuing that plan.
Though her brother couldn't impersonate her at university, her parents came up with another way to bring honor to the family. They changed her name to her brother's.
In that way, her academic records would be issued under the name Janel Harris, and they could proudly claim that their son had graduated from university to the outside world. That was how they could bring glory to the family.
Since all Janel, or perhaps, Sonia wanted was to go to university, she agreed without hesitation.
Her parents somehow managed to pull some strings and successfully change her name before her university enrolment.
"But even if the marriage contract uses the name Janel Harris, wouldn't the birthdate and astrological house be mine?"
Sonia had calmed down by then, but she still felt trapped and unable to find her way out.
Shannon explained, "In mystic arts, a name is another identifier just like birthdate and astrological house. A name is usually given at birth and grows alongside the individual.
"Every time someone calls your name, it strengthens the bond between you and that name."
As an individual grew older, the deeper their connection with the name was. That was one of the key factors in how spirits recognize a person.
That was why the Grim Reaper called out the names of spirits when escorting them to the underworld. It was also why demons attempted to confuse and control humans by calling their names and seeking a response.
When praying, people often silently repeated the name of a deity and hoped their plea would be heard.
The confirmation instantly eased the impact of the ghost marriage on Sonia, but changing her name back before the marriage contract was burned wasn't an easy task for her.
Sonia had considered telling her parents about her pregnancy with a wealthy man's child. Perhaps they wouldn't sell her off to a dead man for 200 thousand dollars if they knew.
But she was revolted by the idea of a ghost marriage. Her parent's utter disregard for her life filled her with resentment. She wouldn't want to give them money so easily.
Just as she was in a dilemma, Shannon reminded her, "The Johnsons may not be a top-tier household, but they hold some influence locally. Since you're carrying their child, you can negotiate for other terms instead of asking for money."
She didn't elaborate further on what the terms meant, but Sonia wasn't stupid. She quickly understood what Shannon was implying.
If the Johnsons would restore her name and sever her ties with her family, she would agree to get rid of the child.
It wasn't fair to the child, but she had to prioritize herself for now.
