The Jensens seemed horrified to hear Shannon's words.
Alex stared at Zane in disbelief, while Hank shot to his feet and had a dark face. Adam, Hector, and the others looked equally grim.
Zane had spoken five words earlier at the banquet. Since his lifespan had shortened due to his childling's fate, any additional loss caused by the incident would mean that Adam's family owed him deeply.
"Shannon, is there anything we can do to help?" If there was a way to mitigate the damage, neither Adam nor the Jensen family would hesitate to act.
Zane had spent much of his life in a sanatorium due to his illness and was often treated as an invisible figure within the family, but he was undeniably a Jensen. Even if Alex didn't favor him, he wouldn't want to see him die.
"Having the childling's fate means that every year of his life is hard-fought. I'll start by nurturing his soul. Only when his soul is strong enough can we break the childling's fate."
She added after a pause, "Plus, he needs to accumulate merit."
Meritorious energy could counteract the negative effect of the power of words, and it could also bring him blessings and extend his lifespan. But merits weren't something that could easily be accumulated just by doing good deeds.
They typically came from significant contributions to the nation or saving lives to earn heartfelt gratitude from others. For instance, soldiers who served their country often had enough merit to protect not only themselves but also their future generations or reincarnations.
For Zane, the simplest way was to donate money. "Let's donate money, and it must be in Zane's name," Shannon announced.
Adam immediately responded, "That's no problem. I'll have a charitable foundation set up in Zane's name." That way, all those who benefited from the foundation would remember Zane's name.
For Adam, anything that could be solved with money wasn't a problem. Zane had willingly risked shortening his lifespan to help Shannon, and Adam felt that it was only right to return the favor.
Their shares totaled 3%, and even after deducting what Shannon had donated to earthquake relief, the remaining dividends for the year were still a substantial amount.
By using this money for the donation, Shannon could help Caleb and Marie recover some of the fortunes they'd lost.
Alex had planned to donate ten million dollars, but Shannon's words made him feel a surge of frustration.
He'd given nearly half of his assets to Linda during his divorce, and if he now had to part with another year's worth of dividends, he'd feel heartbroken.
No matter how unwilling he was, he had no choice but to grit his teeth under the expectant gazes and say, "Fine… I'll donate one year's worth too."
Zane was his biological son, after all.
