The scandal on the island had barely died down, and now they wanted to plan a grand wedding?
Not only would it publicly humiliate the Arnold family, but it would also dredge up the very mess they'd tried so hard to bury—reminding everyone of just how disgracefully Cole had behaved.
Eric was completely against it.
Howard shot to his feet, pinched his arm to summon a few tears, and forced his voice to tremble with emotion as he said, "It's easy for you to say. You've got a son, so of course you don't care about the gossip.
"But Sarah's a woman. She got pregnant before marriage, and now people are already whispering. If we don't even give her a proper wedding, how do you think that makes her look in business circles? What does that say about the Jansen family's reputation?"
Calvin's voice was low but steady. "You've got a point. The Larson family has no reason to mistreat its future daughter-in-law. But still, Cole just got engaged to Regina not long ago. Jumping straight into another wedding now… Isn't that a bit too fast?"
"Mr. Larson Senior… So, are you saying my daughter doesn't deserve the same treatment as Ms. Arnold?" Rachel asked.
Then, she suddenly burst into tears, pulling Sarah into a soft embrace. Tears trickled down her cheeks as she spoke.
"My poor Sarah... sent to the Larson family only to be treated like a burden. She was scolded in the middle of the night by her future father-in-law, forced to move her own luggage, and when she tried to dismiss a maid, her future mother-in-law lashed out at her.
"Everyone out there says the Larson family is a den of wolves. I didn't believe it at first, but now that Sarah's been through it, I see exactly what kind of misery lives in this house.
"Honestly, maybe she shouldn't marry into this family at all. We'll just take her and the baby home. The Jansen family won't let her starve."
Calvin's brows knitted tighter with every word. "She had to move her own luggage? She got scolded for dismissing a maid? What the hell is going on here? I told you all to bring her back to rest and take care of her… and this is how you take care of her?"
His voice broke off as a violent coughing fit took hold of him.
Serena immediately rushed forward to pat his back gently. "Grandpa, please calm down."
"How am I supposed to stay calm? Serena, you're part of the Jansen family too. Even if Sarah weren't carrying Cole's child, she's still a guest in our home. How could you let this happen?"
He turned his glare on Eric and Melissa. "If you two couldn't accept her as a daughter-in-law, why didn't you rein Cole in when he was messing around?
