Joycelyn almost got thrown out, and the shock jolted her awake. 

She blinked her eyes, hazy with confusion. ‘Did Ellison carry me upstairs?‘ 

She swallowed nervously and immediately shut her eyes, pretending to still be asleep.

But little did she know, her subconscious movement of clutching him tighter was enough to alert Ellison that she was awake. Ellison lowered his gaze with deliberate slowness, his voice cold and deliberately quiet as he spoke. “Pretending to sleep now, huh?” 

Joycelyn’s lashes fluttered, her breathing a little off, but she kept her eyes 

shut. 

The thought of having embarrassed him in front of his friend made her nervous. 

She hoped he would just let it go if she pretended to be asleep. 

Ellison carried her out of the bathroom and placed her gently on the bed. 

He turned to leave, but the sound of his footsteps faded, and Joycelyn quietly cracked open her eyes. 

Suddenly, she was caught off guard by the sight of Ellison, arms crossed and leaning against the doorframe, his amber eyes sharp and glimmering. 

“Joycelyn, your acting is wasted; you should be dumpster diving with that talent,” he teased, his tone dripping with sarcasm. Joycelyn sighed, defeated, and stopped pretending. 

She sat up and yawned daintily, her voice still a little nasal from the alcohol, and her eyes full of a hesitant innocence. “Sorry… I embarrassed you.” 

The truth was, given the disparity in their positions, she felt like she had caused him a loss of face tonight. 

Ellison’s expression softened slightly when he saw her sincere, childlike look, and for a moment, his heart softened against his will. 

“I just want to know,” Ellison leaned against the doorframe, his gaze fixed on her, “how could you agree to something like that with your… friend?” 

“Because they offered more money,” Joycelyn replied, her eyes meeting his with an honest, almost too straightforward look, despite the guilt bubbling inside her. 

Ellison’s eyes narrowed, his voice a little lazy. “So, the money ran out?” 

“No, there’s still plenty left,” she said, her delicate face radiating a sort of innocent charm. 

Ellison asked, “How much did you make in overtime?” 

“7 thousand dollars….” she answered sheepishly, laughing a little at her own embarrassment. 

Ellison shot her a side–eye. He looked like he wanted to scold her but didn’t know how. 

Joycelyn said, “This is different from the money you were given. That’s someone else’s earnings.”

He didn’t understand but didn’t push further. 

Joycelyn tensed up immediately, her eyes widening. 

“Well…” she said nervously, her voice stammering as she tried to stop him. 

At first, it seemed like an offhand question, but seeing her panicked reaction made Ellison raise an eyebrow. He picked up the bag. 

Joycelyn rushed out of bed, but in her drunken haze and grogginess, she stumbled and ended up diving straight into Ellison’s chest. 

“Ouch, that hurts,” she winced, clutching her forehead. 

Ellison grunted as he instinctively caught her. 

“Not something you want anyone to see?” Ellison beat her to it, unwrapping the package. 

Inside was a black men’s business watch. The receipt was still there. 

He glanced at the price and the date on the receipt. It was bought yesterday. 

“For my birthday?” he asked, glancing from the watch to Joycelyn, who stood there awkwardly. 

“It was meant to be…” she trailed off, unsure how to explain. 

“Then why didn’t you give it to me?” Ellison took the watch out, inspecting it. 

Although it was less than 100 thousand dollars, the design looked alright. 

“It’s too cheap compared to the one you wear… the one worth more than a million,” Joycelyn explained, rubbing her forehead where it still hurt from the collision. 

Ellison narrowed his eyes as he glanced at his own watch. 

“Did you run into Carmelo when you went to buy it?” 

“Ah?” Joycelyn replied, confused. “Who’s Carmelo?” 

“This watch was a gift from a friend of mine,” he replied coolly. 

“Wasn’t it bought by Ms. Wilson?” Joycelyn blurted out without thinking. 

She had originally intended to stay silent about today’s gossip, but unexpectedly, she couldn’t hold back. 

Now that it was out, it made her seem jealous. 

But she didn’t. 

Realizing her slip, she quickly added, “I didn’t mean to pry into your past with Ms. Wilson, really! I just overheard a bit of your conversation today. Everyone has a past, right? It’s normal.” 

Joycelyn explained seriously, voicing her true thoughts. 

As she spoke, her bright, sparkling eyes were fixed on Ellison.

Ellison stared at her silently, his jaw tight with suppressed anger.

“You’re so magnanimous,” he muttered, his face taut with a restrained temper. 

Joycelyn, sensing the pressure building up, lowered her voice. “We got married for our families, after all.” 

Without love as a foundation, their marriage felt like a house of cards. 

She had always wondered if his choice to marry her was perhaps a form of rebellion, given the kind of women who probably admired him.
