Susanna thought about it for a moment, but in the end, she just couldn’t take it anymore. She grabbed her phone, ready to call Hull.

Before she could dial, Barnaby cut in, “You’re about to call my boss, aren’t you?”

She shot him a look. “What else would I be doing?”

She knew better than to bother Star. And honestly, it was pretty clear to her by now that Hull wasn’t exactly the type to take orders from Mr. Quinn either.

Barnaby shook his head. “You really shouldn’t call him.”

Susanna raised an eyebrow.

“He’s got a big job this afternoon,” Barnaby explained. “Chances are he’s in the middle of a shootout or something right now.”

At that, Susanna’s mouth twitched. She promptly put her phone away.

Yeah, with things like this going on, there was no way she was calling Hull. Not unless she wanted to get chewed out, or worse.

She put her phone down, threw off the blanket, got up from the sofa, and stomped upstairs.

Barnaby, predictably, started to follow her.

“I’m changing,” Susanna called over her shoulder.

“Oh.”

For once, Barnaby actually stayed out of her room. Still, he couldn’t help but wonder—what was she changing for? Was she planning to go out? That was definitely not a good idea.

Now that she was involved with Black Gate, it was only a matter of time before they came looking for her. If she tried to leave, Barnaby couldn’t guarantee he’d be able to keep her safe.

Soon enough, Susanna came back out, dressed in a comfy pair of jeans and a hoodie—clothes Hull had sent over for her after she’d had to borrow his that one time. At least the guy had some manners.

Barnaby took one look and groaned, “Susie, you’re not thinking of going out, are you? No way.”

He didn’t even have to think about it. Too many unpredictable things could happen if she left, and honestly, Barnaby had enough on his plate already. He was already annoyed he hadn’t been sent on the afternoon job. The last thing he needed was Susanna getting herself into trouble.
