“That’s good then,” Ines replied. She wanted to cry. If it hadn’t been for the presence of Lucas and his wife, she might’ve already been in tears.
Lucas, having witnessed the bond between Ines and Mr. Meyer, could empathize with Ines’ feelings. “Madam, as much as I share your concern, I have faith in Mr. Meyer’s ability. He’s not the kind to be bested by a mere river. He’ll return safely. I assure you.”
“Thank you, Lucas. I have faith too. But in Ethan’s absence, you should take it easy at the hospital. Take your time to recover before returning to work. Consider it an extended vacation.”
“Madam, I need to be back in a couple of days. My injuries are not that serious. With Mr. Meyer absent, the rumors are causing unrest. I have to return or the company’s stock might fluctuate,” Lucas insisted.
Over the years at the Meyer Group, Lucas felt a close bond with Ethan. Despite the occasional playful threats and intimidation, Ethan had always treated him well. He felt a brotherly affection towards him. At this time, he couldn’t bear to see the Meyer Group in trouble.
Ines had a plan in mind. She suggested holding a press conference to announce that Ethan had been found, but was severely injured and unable to handle company affairs temporarily.
“Madam, you’re managing both the Galeana Group and the Meyer Group. It’s too much for one person to handle. I’m familiar with the company’s operations. With me by your side, things would be much easier,” Lucas insisted.
Ines reluctantly turned to Fanny. Although Fanny usually appeared gentle, she was straightforward when she spoke. She quickly understood Ines’ intent and told Lucas off. “Lucas, are you a workaholic? Your boss has already told you to rest. What are you hurrying for? Don’t overestimate your abilities. The sun will still rise even without you.”
Lucas looked a bit upset, and lowered his voice, “Fanny, come on, give me some dignity.”
“Can dignity save you? You better rest well in the hospital. After you recover, you can work as much as you want.”
“Alright, enough,” Ines interrupted their squabble. “Lucas, that’s the final decision. I’ll leave now and visit you when I get the chance.”
Once they left the hospital, Phoebe noticed Ines’ mood had improved significantly. She was calm, not the repressed calm when she first woke up, but genuinely calm.
“Izzy, are you really okay?”
“Don’t worry. I’m fine. This time, it’s my turn to wait for him. No matter how long it takes, I’ll wait.” She remembered how Ethan had stayed by her side when she was unconscious. This time, she would do the same, and wait for him to return. Even if it took a lifetime, she was willing.
Phoebe watched Ines’ determined expression and felt a pang in her heart. She knew that her friend had given up everything for Ethan. If Ethan couldn’t return, Ines’ life would be over. No one else would ever be able to touch her heart.
“Alright, Izzy. I’ll be with you. Where do you want to go now?”
“I’ll head to the Meyer Group. The situation at the company must be chaotic now. I can’t just sit around.”
Phoebe nodded and drove in the direction of the Meyer Group. As they walked in, Ines saw a busy figure. Stumbling slightly, she blurted out, “Ethan.”
Beasley was accompanying Erica to the Meyer Group. He was trying to help out in Ethan’s office but hadn’t been involved in this kind of work in a long time, and he felt a bit helpless.
Ines laughed, “Don’t be greedy. Noel will get jealous.”
“Speaking of Noel, he can be of help. His workload isn’t heavy lately. I can bring him over to help you anytime.”
“You’re willing to exploit your own boyfriend for me?”
“I call it sacrificing my boyfriend for my best friend. You should feel flattered.”
Meanwhile, Silvia arrived at the hospital. Russel’s injuries were severe and he wasn’t able to get out of bed. Out of humanitarian consideration, he was allowed to stay at the hospital for treatment.
The evidence Silvia had presented was crystal clear. Coupled with the documents handed over by Jacob, the case was as clear as day. It didn’t take long for the authorities to verify the evidence and transfer the case to the judiciary.
Two police officers were stationed at the entrance of the hospital room. Silvia had already obtained permission from the relevant authorities and was able to enter smoothly.
Russel looked at his smiling daughter standing before him. His tone was calm, but his brows were furrowed in a tight knot. “Silvia,” he said, “are you pleased to see your father in this state?”
Silvia studied the man she had despised for over a decade. He lay weakly on the bed, and his body was frail and worn after just three days. Even the vigor he was desperately trying to maintain was nothing but a facade. Yet, she felt not an ounce of pity. There was only an unprecedented sense of satisfaction.
