“The car’s just around here. They couldn’t go far. They must be within this vicinity,” Ines asserted with certainty.
“Don’t worry, lady. We’ll definitely find Ethan,” a soldier said softly.
For Ines, every minute and second was agonizing, as if time was creeping along at a snail's pace.
Near Ethan’s car, Russel and Matthew were found, buried under the debris. Both were severely injured and unconscious. Trenton ordered for them to be rushed to the hospital immediately.
Ines watched them closely, gritting her teeth. The anger in her eyes turned into a roaring wildfire. She looked like a fierce beast. Her entire body was radiating a dark aura. If it had not been for Trenton’s firm grip on her shoulder, she would have charged at them and given them a beating.
If it had not been for them, Ethan would not have come to this place, and he wouldn’t have been caught in this disaster.
Trenton understood her hatred and said softly, “Izzy, they won’t get off easily. We don’t need to get our hands dirty dealing with them. Their retribution will come soon.”
To people like them, death might be a merciful end. A life was worse than death. To be locked away in a cell, and to be forced to reflect on their deeds were the real punishment.
“It’s all their fault. All these problems were caused by them,” Ines growled. The usually gentle and polite woman was pushed to her limit, not caring about appearances anymore.
Trenton nodded and patted her shoulder gently. “I know, Izzy.”
Ines paused for a moment. Looking at the always calm Trenton, she apologized, “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have yelled at you.”
“You silly girl, it’s okay. We’re family. If you’re hurting, it’s okay to cry,” Trenton softly consoled, pulling her into his embrace.
Ines didn’t cry. Instead, she leaned her head against Trenton’s shoulder. Her eyes were vacant as she watched everyone bustling around. Suddenly, a soldier’s shout rang out, “Everyone, come over here quickly. There’s someone down here.”
Ines snapped out of her daze, breaking free from Trenton’s hold and rushing towards the shout. She fell, but quickly got up and continued running.
Trenton followed closely. Ines disregarded everything else, using her hands to help dig, oblivious to the pain in her fingertips. Her only thought was to find Ethan. Every second earlier meant a second more of safety.
Ines was like a woman possessed. Her fingers were digging through the soil rapidly. Soon, her hands were bleeding, and the blood was mixing with the soil. When she lifted her hands, the men saw the blood on her fingers, but nobody stopped her.
After a long while, they found the person buried under the debris, but it wasn’t Ethan. It was Lucas. The light in Ines’ eyes dimmed. Her strength was drained as she collapsed to the ground.
A soldier checked Lucas’ pulse and exclaimed, “He’s still breathing. Get him to the hospital fast.”
After a while, Ines lifted her tear-streaked face to look at Trenton. “Trenton, from your years of experience, do you think... do you think Ethan has a good chance of surviving?”
“Izzy, let’s not think about that now. Just stay calm and wait.”
“Why aren’t you answering my question,” Ines whispered. Her voice was barely audible, swept away by the night breeze.
Trenton looked at Ines in such a state and his usually stoic heart couldn’t help but ache. Regardless, he explained, “Izzy, although Ethan didn’t join the military, I’ve trained both him and his brother in a military style since they were kids. Your grandfather even sent him to a special forces training camp. He’s no ordinary man. He knows how to protect himself in dangerous situations, so he’ll be fine.”
Trenton wasn’t sure if he was trying to reassure Ines or himself, but either way, it needed to be said.
“Really?”
Trenton nodded firmly. “Izzy, your dad’s a soldier. I don’t make false promises.”
Ines nodded emphatically in return. “I believe you. And I believe in Ethan. He said he’d be back. He promised we’d get married once all this was over. He said he’d declare me his one and only wife in front of everyone. He still has promises to keep. He’ll definitely come back.”
