The torrential rain had finally ceased after several days. Just as Ethan was about to wrap up his workday, his phone rang. It was Russel. Lucas was standing by Ethan’s side, giving him a report. Noticing the caller, he chuckled. “Looks like he can’t hold back anymore. A desperate creature will do anything to survive.”
Ethan’s eyes flashed. “Holding back until now is a talent in itself.” After saying that, he answered the call.
“Ethan, let’s meet and talk.”
Russel’s voice was no longer filled with the usual fake gentleness. Things had come to such a pass that all pretenses had been dropped. Ethan was no different.
“Mr. Russel, I don’t think there’s anything for us to discuss. You should be talking to the investigation team, not me,” Ethan replied coldly.
“Ethan, don’t be so quick to decline. Hear me out. You really think your uncle hasn’t left any dirt in my hands over the years? And you, the Meyer Group, do you dare say there’s nothing shady in its growth? Don’t push me to a corner, or we’ll both go down together. You have a family with adorable twin babies. I advise you not to act so recklessly, or you’ll taste the bitter fruit of your actions.”
Russel’s voice was dark and threatening. It was evident that recent events were pushing him to the brink. Ethan’s brows furrowed tightly. He didn’t appreciate anyone threatening his wife and children, but he didn’t doubt Russel’s words. This deep and ruthless man was capable of acting on his words. For his uncle’s sake, Ethan had to walk this path.
“Alright, where do we meet?” Ethan asked.
“Oakwood Estate in the suburbs, I’ll be there after 8pm. Be there or be square.”
Oakwood Estate was a popular retreat for the wealthy located in the suburbs. Its privacy was a key feature. With the recent harsh rain causing a sudden drop in temperature, no one would be seeking refuge from the heat. It was indeed a suitable place for a meeting.
“Okay,” Ethan agreed.
After hanging up the phone, Lucas expressed concern. “Mr. Meyer, I don’t know what tricks he might have up his sleeve. It doesn’t feel safe. I fear he might be setting a trap.”
Ethan thought for a moment before responding, “We’ll bring extra security. They’ll follow discreetly, ready to respond as needed.”
Jacob’s call came in at that moment. As soon as Ethan picked up, he said, “Jacob, are you also going to Oakwood Estate tonight?”
“Russel contacted me. I want to see what he’s up to. After all, this is between him and me. I’m sorry to involve you.”
“Jacob, what are you saying? Without you, the Meyer Group wouldn’t be where it is today. Your business is our family’s business. There’s no need for apologies. We’ll meet at Oakwood Estate tonight.”
Building a successful business is no simple task without the right support. The Meyer Group’s undefeated position in the business world was attributed to this backing.
“Ethan, I don’t know what tricks that old fox Russel has up his sleeve. He wants me to bring all the evidence against him. I guess he wants it back. Bring more people with you, but don’t let them know. It’ll provide some cover.”
Ethan’s words successfully distracted Ines. Ines pouted. “Really, I’m not a neglectful mother. I know all this without you telling me. Besides, there are plenty of people at home to look after her. They must have noticed by now. You don’t need to worry.”
“That’s true. But I can’t help worrying about our little girl.” Ethan’s eyes softened at the thought of their playful and soft little girl.
This man was only concerned about their daughter. It was so unfair. “I think it won’t be long before Olivine completely replaces me in your heart. You only have eyes and heart for her. Don’t forget, I’m the woman who’ll be with you for life. Your darling daughter will eventually become someone else’s.”
Ines was nearly drowned by the jealousy in her heart. Her words were filled with bitterness.
“Alright, my dearest. You’re the one I love the most.”
“Cut the crap, smooth talker! Otherwise, your silver tongue will slip right out of your mouth,” Ines retorted, settling comfortably into the plush sofa. Her fingers twirled a lock of hair as she engaged in flirtatious banter with Ethan. Her face took on the glow of a woman in the throes of new love.
The couple chatted for a good quarter of an hour before Lucas’s voice echoed through the room, announcing it was time to hit the road. In her eagerness not to keep him waiting, Ines quickly instructed Ethan, “Grab a bite before you start dealing with your stuff, alright? Don’t starve yourself.”
“Relax, I’ve got it covered,” Ethan reassured her, flashing a charming smile.
