After hanging up the call, Ethan stepped out of the break room, and looked at the three officers standing before him. “Gentlemen, what were you saying?”
“Mr. Meyer, a few years back, the Meyer Group had a security incident. An agreement was reached between the Meyer Group and the victims’ families, involving a substantial amount of compensation. However, the families are now alleging that they accepted the compensation under duress. We need you to accompany us to the station for an investigation.”
Ethan’s brow furrowed slightly. He just got news of the past incident. The reason Leila had switched the blueprints was because Russel had threatened her using Silvia. As for the allegation of threatening the families, that was impossible.
Ethan quickly understood Russel’s intention. He was doing this on purpose, probably to distract him, so he would not have time to deal with Jacob’s situation. This trip to the station was not going to be simple, and he guessed it would take at least a few days.
Sensing the officers’ determination to do their duty, Ethan realized that he had no choice but to go with them. “Who filed the complaint?”
“The families involved in the accident,” one officer replied.
Ethan remained silent. The officer who had spoken earlier said, “Mr. Meyer, please don’t make this difficult for us.”
Ethan gave a light smile. “Alright, let’s go.”
After ending her call with Ethan, Ines felt increasingly worried. She quickly grabbed her bag and headed out the door. Silas, startled by her sudden action, asked, “Izzy, where are you going?”
“Something seems to have happened to Ethan. I need to see what’s going on.”
“Just be careful, and don’t worry too much. Ethan won’t let anything happen to himself.”
Ines nodded, but her heart was pounding as she rushed into the elevator. Watson had the car ready and was waiting for her.
Ines quickly got into the car and said to Watson, “Watson, drive faster. We need to get to the Meyer Group to find Ethan.”
Seeing Ines’ worried expression, Watson immediately started the car. “Don’t worry, the Meyer Group is not far from here. We’ll be there in three minutes.”
When they arrived at the Meyer Group, they saw Ethan walking out with three policemen. Ines’ heart skipped a beat. She quickly got out of the car.
Ethan also noticed the woman running towards him in her high heels. He smiled slightly as she reached for his hand. “Are you going to the police station now?”
Ethan nodded. “Yes, we’re heading there now.”
“How long will it take?” Ines’ voice trembled slightly.
“I don’t know yet, but don’t worry. It will only be for a few days.”
“A few days?” This was no trivial matter. The thought of Ethan spending a few days at the station weighed heavily on Ines’ heart.
“Were there any witnesses when Leila dealt with this incident?”
Lucas shook his head. “No, Mr. Meyer and I were not in the country at that time. The agreement was reached on the construction site, and there was no one else present. Moreover, the families were negotiated with separately.”
Ines knew this was the usual method of dealing with such incidents. Leila had done the right thing. The best way to handle such matters was to negotiate separately. “So, besides the families and Leila, there were no other witnesses?”
“It appears so.”
A look of worry crossed Ines’ face. “Then, the families are the key to this matter.”
Lucas agreed. “Yes, but they wouldn’t come forward without someone behind them. It’s unlikely that they will be easily persuaded by us.”
“No matter what, we have to give it our best shot. Otherwise, Ethan’s situation will be a tough nut to crack. You need to get information on those people immediately, and we’ll find a time to meet with them. We need to have our lawyer liaise with the police station immediately. We can’t let Ethan spend the night in jail.”
Lucas looked a bit grim. “The lawyer is already on his way to the police station, but Mr. Meyer’s situation is a bit of a sticky wicket. It’s not going to be resolved quickly.”
Ines was fully aware that Ethan wouldn’t walk out of this easily, but she didn’t want to accept that reality just yet. “I know, but we still need to try. I want to stay updated on Ethan’s situation.”
Lucas gave Ines a deep look. Ines knew what he was implying. “Don’t worry about me. I’m fine. How are things arranged for Ethan? Fill me in first.”
