Broken Memories, Intertwined Hearts novel Chapter 424

She could hardly believe it, this was Ines and Watson's car. At that moment, she couldn't help but turn to Lucas, repeating her question, "What on earth happened? That car crash didn't look accidental at all. It seemed like someone had planned it."

Lucas nodded. "You're right, ma'am. It was no accident. Mr. Meyer received a call from his wife when he was off duty. She said that their car was being followed. We immediately contacted the nearest police station and asked them to handle the situation. Meanwhile, Mr. Meyer was in constant contact with his wife, but the more he thought about it, the more something seemed off. He had a hunch about their scheme. Everything was arranged, both the car that followed and the other vehicle. Their aim was to trap Ines and Watson from both sides, leaving almost no chance of survival. But Mr. Meyer’s warning came a bit too late."

Erica tightened her lips. "Such a ruthless move. What kind of deep hatred could drive someone to take such a severe action?"

Lucas shook his head. "I'm not completely sure about the details. There wasn't enough time, and Mr. Meyer didn't have the chance to explain everything to me. I only know roughly what happened."

"What about Ethan? He must know something."

Everyone started looking for Ethan at that moment, but he was nowhere to be found.

Erica sighed softly, she didn't need to guess where he was. "He must be at the ICU right now. Let him calm down. He's not in the mood to talk about it."

Jacob walked over, saying, "Dad, Erica, Ethan doesn't have the energy to handle this matter right now. I'll take care of it. There are only a few people who would hold a grudge against the Meyer family. It's not hard to find them. The key is to find evidence. Without evidence, we can't do anything."

Phillip looked at Jacob's expression and knew that he must have had some idea. "Jacob, do you have a clue?" Jacob nodded, his usually gentle face was somewhat tense. "I have a hint, but I don't know what happened that drove them to take such extreme measures.” It's their usual way of dealing with things, ruthless and cold. But it seemed a bit too flamboyant, so something else must have happened that he didn't know about. Their most direct competitors weren’t Ines and Watson, so Ines must have had something on them, which forced them to make such a desperate move.

"Then you take care of this. Ethan is in no condition to handle it right now." Phillip patted Jacob's shoulder.

"Don't worry, Dad. Izzy just narrowly escaped death, and those people might try again. We need to have someone guard the hospital room."

"Don't worry, I have a plan. I'll arrange for some people from the army to come over. We won't let anything happen to Izzy under our watch. I'll also have the children brought back to the Meyer Mansion from the Galeana family as soon as possible. I can only be at ease when they're at the Meyer Mansion." Phillip was anxious, but he was experienced and could still think clearly in such a situation.

After a while, Ashley brought dinner. Erica didn't have much of an appetite, but she ate a bit anyway.

Ethan, however, didn't even glance at the food. Everyone knew how he was feeling. Ines was still in critical condition, it would be strange if he had the appetite to eat.

In the evening, Erica sent everyone home, but Ashley refused to go, so she stayed.

Erica and Ashley kept Ethan company throughout the night, sitting vigil by the hospital entrance. As dawn was breaking, Ines' primary physician informed them they could visit, suggesting they speak to her, offering words of support and encouragement.

Upon hearing the news, a stunned Ethan quickly rose to his feet, following the doctor to sanitize, don a hazmat suit, mask, and cap, and switch into a fresh pair of shoes. Only after this long list of preparations was Ethan finally escorted into the ICU.

The ICU was filled with the incessant beeping of various machines, a noise that Ethan found grating. It felt as if he was walking with leaden feet. Every step seemed like a monumental struggle. When he finally laid eyes on that familiar face, Ethan felt as though his breath was being drawn out of him. He strode forward, taking Ines' hand in his own, and after a lengthy pause, he managed to utter just one word, "Izzy..."
