The moment Silvia arrived at the hospital, her phone rang. It was Russel, and he let loose a tirade as soon as she answered. "How many times have I told you to stay away from those sleazy bars? All sorts of characters hang out there, why don't you ever listen to me?"
"So, you had someone tail me again," Silvia retorted, certain of it. She was sick to death of being tracked, of having no space of her own.
"I did it for your own good, out of concern for you," Russel countered. If he hadn't had someone tail her, he wouldn't have known about the incident last night.
Concern? Silvia laughed a little at that. "You have no right to speak to me that way. We're merely business associates. You don't get to interfere with my life."
"Silvia, don't forget I'm your biological father," Russel growled from the other end.
His words hit her hard. If there was anyone who had no right to say that to her, it was him. He had never fulfilled his duty as a father, and he was the root of all her pain. If it weren't for him, she wouldn't have become the person she despised.
Silvia composed herself, with a bitter laughter. "Is that so? I don't recall having a father. Maybe I lost my memory, because I don't remember a man like you being part of my life for the past twenty-plus years. If you're really my father, why keep it a secret? Why not announce it to the world, let me taste the life of a privileged posh girl?"
Her sarcasm was obvious, and Russel softened his tone. "Silvia, don't say such things. You know my status, and you know that I can't publicize your identity. But that doesn't change the fact that you're my daughter."
"Your words mean nothing."
Russel tried to explain patiently. "Silvia, you're my only daughter. Everything I have will be yours someday. But I have my own difficulties. I hope you understand."
Understand? Every time he said that, she felt sick. She didn't care about his wealth. "Enough. If you only called to lecture me, you can save it. I'm an adult. I don't need your instructions. Keep your fake fatherly concern to yourself. I don't want it."
"You're just like your mother, stubborn as a mule."
"You have the gall to mention my mother. I suppose there's no limit to your shamelessness."
"Silvia, no matter what, your mother was the woman I loved most in my life. You're the fruit of our love. I had my reasons for leaving her. I hope you understand that."
The fruit of their love? Did he think she was a fool? She knew everything she should, and even things she shouldn’t. She knew what kind of man he was better than anyone else.
With that, Silvia hung up and started to think about what to do next. Russel paced his office, and his mind was in turmoil. After a long thought, he called Matthew to his office. "Matthew, there's some trouble with Silvia; it seems Ines got hold of some kind of leverage against her. Handle this issue as soon as you can. Make it clean."
"Do you mean only Ines, or anyone else regardless?"
Russel hesitated for a moment, a fierce look flashed across his face. "I want a one-time solution. I don't care who's with her."
Matthew understood his meaning. "I see, but this issue may not be easy to handle. Acting rashly now could easily leave traces."
"We have no choice. After all, we hold plenty of their secrets too. They wouldn't dare to act rashly. Besides, as you know, Silvia is my only daughter in this life. I can't just do nothing and watch her fall into trouble."
Matthew nodded. "I understand. But we also need to caution Miss Silvia. They're suspicious of your and her identities, but they haven't found any evidence yet. If this issue comes to light, it would seriously damage your image and be extremely detrimental to the upcoming elections."
Russel rubbed his temples, feeling at a loss for how to deal with Silvia. "I can't get through to her at all. She's as wild as a mustang," he lamented. Matthew was about to say something but refrained. He knew Russel well enough to understand that, despite his tough exterior, he cared deeply for Silvia. At this moment, any words of advice would fall on deaf ears.
