"Do you find it weird that the person you saved ended up being my wife?" Ethan continued to probe.
"Kinda, yeah. I mean, you were all hung up on another girl back then. It was surprising enough that you got hitched, let alone to the girl I saved."
"Do you keep in touch with Grandpa a lot? Is that how you knew about my marriage?"
"Nah, Gramps retired. He's out of the loop now. I have other sources for news. I've only talked to him twice in the past few years. Once was a year ago when things weren't that dire, and the other time was a week ago when I found out you were married and had a kid."
"You're just fobbing me off, aren't you? I know there's more to it." After contemplating for a while, Ethan felt something was off and came back to the original question.
"You're too smart for your own good, Ethan. Nothing gets past you. But it's no big secret. Maybe I messed up. I was severely injured back then and not exactly in my right mind. When I saved Izzy, she wasn't breathing. So, I always thought I only saved one girl, and the other girl died. Seeing her alive and well today, and being your wife, is a bit of a shock."
Plus, he was unconscious for a while back then. After waking up, he was busy rehabilitating and planning to go undercover. He didn't really look into those matters. So, today was indeed a huge surprise.
Ethan's heart clenched. "Izzy wasn't breathing?"
"That's what it seemed like at the time. But don't fret. I might've got it wrong."
Ethan nodded. "Izzy was seriously injured back then, especially her head. After all these years, her memory still hasn't returned. I took her to a psychologist. The doctor said we can't rush it. She has to recover at her own pace."
"That sounds about right. We all sustained serious injuries back then. It's a miracle we survived."
After hearing Beasley’s explanation, Ethan didn't dwell on it anymore.
Just then, Erica brought some snacks over.
"You guys shouldn't just be drinking. It's not good for your health. Have something to eat," Erica advised.
"Thanks, Mom." They both chuckled. Seeing their similar faces, Erica couldn't help but gently rub their heads. Her eyes then landed on the dust on the ground, and she slapped their heads while complaining, "I don't know what you guys are thinking, choosing such a dirty place. I'm heading back down. You guys enjoy."
The brothers tilted their heads slightly, but their eyes landed on the variety of snacks. They couldn't help but exchange a smile, sipping their drinks and chatting.
"How's your relationship with Aaron?" Beasley remembered that they had a falling out over a girl and had been distant since.
"Don't worry, Beasley. We've made up."
"Next time we have a drink, remember to invite him and Noel too. Just the two of us together isn't lively enough."
"Who said it was just you two? Am I not here too?"
As soon as Beasley finished speaking, Ashley somehow appeared next to them, holding a beer and grinning at them.
"My grades would be better than others' even if I didn’t go to school for three months. The excellent genes of the Meyer family are in me. How could I possibly get worse?"
Ethan was speechless. What Ashley said was indeed true. Even though she was playing while studying, she still became the top student in A City. Their father held a three-day banquet at home because she was the third genius in the Meyer family. She was the pride of their family.
"So, you also ranked first?"
"Of course. I won't let you down."
Ashley kept listing Ethan's "misdeeds." Ethan shook his head helplessly, thinking Ashley was really a flexible kid.
They chatted while drinking, creating a warm atmosphere.
In the end, Ashley got drunk. She leaned on Beasley's shoulder, oblivious to her surroundings.
"This girl can't hold her liquor. She got knocked out by one beer." Beasley chuckled while looking at Ashley on his shoulder.
"Beasley, our family hasn't let her drink for years, so it'd be weird if she could handle a lot. She only dared to let loose because she knew you wouldn't have the heart to turn her down, and her dad wouldn't scold her. She misses you, sure, but she also just has a craving for booze."
"This girl is still as sly as ever, even trying to play us." Beasley chuckled, then carried Ashley away. Meanwhile, Ethan headed back to his room.
