Ines arrived at the office really early since she skipped breakfast at home. No sooner had she sat down than her stomach started grumbling. Indeed, habits can be a scary thing. Just because she was mad and didn't eat breakfast, her stomach started to complain.
Ines frowned, speaking to the two little ones in her belly, "Babies, bear with me a bit, I'll get you breakfast in a jiffy."
After settling her bag, Ines got up ready to go grab breakfast. Just as she was about to open the door, Silas walked in with a thermos in hand. Seeing her about to leave, he asked, "Izzy, where are you off to? I brought you breakfast, eat first before you head out."
Ines, having a hunch, took the thermos from Silas, opened it and found her favorite apple pie on the top layer, likely made by Eda, tomato cream soup in the middle, and some fries at the bottom.
Taking in her bad mood, and the fact that Ethan called him early that morning specifically asking him to bring her breakfast, Silas sensed trouble in paradise, he asked, "Izzy, are you and Ethan butting heads?"
"No, I just feel a bit off." Ines replied nonchalantly. Silas, unaware of what happened, just assumed it was mood swings from her pregnancy. He chuckled, "You're more prone to getting cranky in your state. Ethan was worried sick after you left this morning. He called me to bring you breakfast, afraid you might go hungry."
Ines was not in the mood, "If he really cared, he'd bring it himself, not have someone else do it. This is so insincere."
Silas found her sulkiness amusing, "Ethan said your housekeeper is off today, and he didn't have time to make breakfast. He didn't trust takeouts either. If he were to make breakfast, you'd have to wait too long, so he asked me to bring breakfast from home. He didn't want you to starve."
Ines had no comeback for that. Ethan sure had a way with words, leaving no room for misunderstanding. It was clearly his fault for making her mad, yet everyone around her thought she was being petty and tried to persuade her otherwise.
Ines just stopped talking and started eating her breakfast. Silas just shook his head, smiling, and got to work.
A while later, Silas received a call from the receptionist, saying Lucas from the Meyer Group was here to see Ines.
"Izzy, Lucas is here, he's downstairs, should I let him up?" Silas asked. Ines looked up, remembering what Ethan said in the morning, she quickly figured out his purpose, probably to explain why Leila's number was in Ethan's phone. In any case, she didn't intend to start a conflict with Ethan. Seeing Lucas wouldn't hurt either. Listening to what he had to say might provide some clarity.
"Let him up."
About two minutes later, Lucas hurried upstairs. Knowing they had things to discuss, Silas left the room on his own accord.
Lucas looked at Ines seriously, with a hint of guilt in his eyes.
Ines found it amusing, she rarely saw Lucas with such an expression, "Did Ethan send you here?"
"No, this was my decision. I thought about it all night. This started with me, and I should explain it to you."
Lucas knew what Ines was most worried about was whether Ethan still had feelings for his ex-girlfriend after they got married. So he specifically brought the phone to show her.
Ines didn't take the phone from Lucas, looking at him doubtfully, "You mean Leila's phone has been with you this whole time? And you just turned it on?" She originally thought Leila's phone was with Ethan. She left in a huff this morning because of Silvia's drama, not giving Ethan a chance to explain.
Lucas nodded, "Yes, this phone has been in my office drawer the whole time. The battery had gone bad from being left unused for so long. I got it repaired by a phone repair shop, and it can barely turn on now. However, it's still affected, and many functions don't work anymore."
"So how did it receive calls?" Ines pondered.
"I've been thinking about that all night. This phone has been out of battery for a long time. Even if there's credit in the SIM card, you'd just reach a switched-off status. It couldn't have received calls."
"Maybe someone else is using the SIM card now." Ines said, taking the phone. Holding it gave her a strange feeling.
Lucas nodded, "That's the only explanation."
Ines seemed to have thought of something and quickly operated the phone to check the call history. Just like Ethan said, there was a period a few years back when he was hitting up this number like crazy, always in the dead of night. After a while, he started to dial it down to just the occasional call.
