Broken Memories, Intertwined Hearts novel Chapter 338

Ethan was taken aback for a moment, then chuckled, "Alright, I'll keep spoiling you till the end of time."

Ines smiled contentedly. She always had a feeling that if she didn't experience the ordinary married life of going to work and coming home every day, she would truly doubt everything, even the existence of genuinely good men like Ethan in the world.

Before she clocked out from work, Ethan would personally come to pick her up. The receptionists at Galeana Group had gotten used to Ethan's punctual appearances, so they simply greeted him and let him through. By now, who didn't know that the CEO of Meyer Group and the chairman of Galeana Group were a couple? Moreover, their relationship was really good, making others envious.

Once Ethan stepped into the elevator, the two receptionists couldn't help but whisper, "Man, I wish my husband was half as amazing as him."

"Stop dreaming, or you'll turn into a spinster. Men change once they're married. It's rare to find a gem like Mr. Meyer," the slightly older receptionist replied with a chuckle.

"Hey, don't rain on my parade. I still want to find a husband who's a moneymaker."

"Take it from me, my hubby used to pick me up every day when he was courting me. I was always late, but he patiently waited for me. But less than a month after we got married, I was back on the public bus to work. The honeymoon phase is long gone."

"Really? Now you're making me scared to tie the knot."

Ines was totally oblivious to this chit-chat as she was engrossed in her paperwork. It wasn't until Ethan was standing next to her that she snapped back to reality. She flashed him a small smile, "You're here early, aren't you? There's still some time before I knock off, right?"

"Today is that man's birthday. He specifically called and wanted me to bring you along."

Ethan was initially reluctant to bring Ines due to her current circumstances, but since the man specifically invited her, it was hard for him to refuse. The most crucial part was that he can't openly cut ties with that man now, as it wouldn't bode well for either of them.

Given the situation, he probably won't dare to do anything to Ines.

Ines was taken aback, "Whose birthday?"

"The enemy of Jacob," Ethan replied, his face creased in a frown, clearly despising him.

Ines immediately understood. Ethan was referring to A City's deputy mayor, Russel, the man who had harmed her in secret not long ago.

"Why would he invite us?"

"He's probably trying to send us a warning. But don't worry, just stick with me. No one would dare to lay a finger on you. Jacob's family is going too."

Ines nodded, "Do I need to change?"

Ethan glanced at Ines and said, "No need. You're already dressed appropriately for such an occasion."

"Alright then, just give me a moment. I have one last document to look over."

Ethan nodded. The room was a bit too warm due to the high setting of the AC. Feeling a bit hot, he took off his jacket and hung it on the back of Ines' chair. He casually placed his phone on the table before heading to the restroom.

Actually, she thought about deleting Silvia's number as well, but upon further thought, she decided against it. That would be too obvious. She trusted that Ethan didn't have romantic feelings for Silvia, so there was no need. She just didn't want her husband to have such an intimate nickname for another woman.

With that thought, she scrolled through the contact list to see what her own name was.

Izzy.

Seeing this familiar nickname, Ines smiled faintly. Feeling amused, she started to scroll through Ethan's contact list. But as she scrolled down, her brain went blank.

Leila. It was so glaring.

For some reason, Ines dialed the number.

The line was still active. After a few rings, a slow and indifferent female voice came through, "Sorry, the number you are trying to reach is not available at the moment. Please try again later."

Ines suddenly felt weak. All her joyful feelings vanished, replaced by a coldness that crept from her feet to her heart. Her fingers tightened around the phone. Ethan was still keeping the number of a woman who had died years ago.

What the heck was all that about? Ines didn't dare to think too deep.

She couldn't picture if Ethan, during those sleepless nights, was acting like a fool, dialing a number that would never be answered over and over again. What was going on inside his head at that time? Were there still moments like this after they got married? A swarm of questions buzzed around Ines.
