Just as Emma was wondering why Aiden was late, he rushed in.
He immediately noticed Emma's unusually tight grip on Ines' arm and the swelling in her eyes. He felt a pang of worry and quickly asked, "Emma, is something wrong with the baby?"
Eda had never liked Aiden, especially after his behavior post-marriage. She stood coldly on the side, not responding to him, and Ines wasn't giving him any friendly looks either.
Emma looked at Aiden calmly, unsure if his anxious demeanor was genuine.
Silence fell, and Aiden's suspicions seemed to be confirmed. His face turned pale. Eda watched him not with sympathy, instead feeling a sense of satisfaction. "Now you're worried? Where were you before? It's really disappointing how you've handled being a father."
"Emma, what's wrong with Jasmine?" Aiden's voice trembled. Emma felt a pang of sympathy for him, but before she could say anything, the door to the room opened. Silas and Ethan walked in, with Ethan holding Jasmine who'd just been examined. His face was soft as he looked at Jasmine, clearly very fond of her.
Ines noticed his movements were much smoother than before, not as stiff. She couldn't help but crack a small smile. Who would have thought this usually cold man liked children so much? He was the same with Naomi, and now with Jasmine.
Emma also saw Ethan holding the baby and knew without asking that it was her daughter. She smiled at Ethan and said, "Ethan, bring Jasmine over here for me to see."
Ethan gave a slight smile and handed Jasmine over to Emma. Emma's movements were a bit rough due to her uncontrollable excitement.
Ethan frowned slightly and said, "Be careful, babies are delicate. You don't want to hurt her."
Emma laughed, "Thanks for the heads up, I got a bit carried away and didn't notice."
Ethan moved over to Ines, who whispered to him, "She insists on calling me 'sister', what can I do?"
Ethan looked at her, knowing she had fully let go of her resentment and made peace with Emma. He was glad to see this, as Emma was one of her few relatives.
Even though he was kind to her, he could not make up for the lack of familial bonds. Emma had already forgotten about Aiden, all her attention on the baby in her arms. The baby's skin was wrinkly and red, which didn’t look cute to her. She looked at Eda with some dissatisfaction, "Eda, I'm not ugly. Why does Jasmine look like this, besides her long eyelashes?
Will boys like her if she's only got pretty eyelashes, but the rest of her doesn't look good?"
Ines couldn't help but laugh. She couldn't understand Emma's strange way of thinking. The first thing she thought of was whether boys would like her daughter. On hearing Emma's words, Eda also laughed. She straightened out the hair on Jasmine's face, "What kind of mother would dislike her own daughter? No matter what she looks like, she is your child. All newborns look like this. You probably looked worse than Jasmine when you were a baby. Don't worry, she'll look better after a while."
"That's good, I was afraid she would really be ugly. Then she would definitely be disliked." Emma breathed a sigh of relief. She didn't want her daughter to be laughed at for her looks. She had experienced that before and it was very awful. She didn't want her child to go through the same thing.
Upon hearing this, both of them immediately pulled their hands back, their movements perfectly synchronized.
"Don't you think her nose looks a lot like Dad's? It's really cute." Emma said,
"Her mouth is cute too, just the right size, very fitting.
Yeah, her face shape is okay, she should have a pretty face when she grows up."
Ines took a good look but couldn't see any of the features Emma was talking about. She looked at Emma speechlessly, "Weren't you just complaining about your daughter being ugly? How come you now think she looks good everywhere?" This quick change of heart was indeed fast, proving the saying that a child was always the most beautiful in their parents' eyes.
Emma chuckled, defending in a soft voice, "At first glance, she might not seem pretty. But if you look closely, her features are actually quite delicate. She's gonna outshine me when she grows up."
"Why do you always compare yourself to her?" Ines asked.
"Well, I just hope she does better than me. It's not right for each generation to be weaker than the previous one, right? You hear that, Jasmine? You gotta be more good-looking and capable than your mom!" Emma said.
