Chapter 221

Erin’s POV

I stepped into the shower, letting the hot water cascade over my body as I tried to process the unexpected arrival of Derek’s mother. The sound of Judy Stone’s commanding voice still echoed in my ears, making me tense despite the soothing warmth enveloping me.

As I massaged shampoo into my hair, memories of my previous encounters with Judy at Darkwood Estate flooded back. Her cold, dismissive glances whenever we crossed paths. The way she would abruptly end conversations when I entered a room. Even after Bradley had admitted his wrongdoing, Judy had maintained her frosty demeanor toward me.

I rinsed my hair, wondering why she had chosen to visit Derek’s home this morning of all times. Perhaps she simply wanted to see her son? But the urgency in her voice suggested otherwise. Whatever the reason, I couldn’t shake the feeling that her presence spelled troubleparticularly with me being here.

After drying off, I wrapped a towel around myself and cautiously opened the bathroom door. The bedroom was empty, Derek having gone downstairs to deal with his mother. On the bed lay a set of neatly folded clothes that hadn’t been there before. I approached them curiously.

The outfit was simple yet undeniably eleganta cream cashmere sweater and tailored dark jeans from Aurélie, one of the highend clothing brands owned by Stone Group. I recognized the distinctive logo on the tags; it was their signature collection, the kind displayed prominently in luxury department stores..

Derek must have asked someone to bring these for me. The thought of him considering my needs even amidst his mother’s unexpected visit made warmth spread through my chest. I slipped into the clothes, which fit perfectly, then blowdried my hair until it fell in soft waves around my shoulders.

I was just finishing when the bedroom door opened and Derek entered. His expression was unreadable, but I detected a slight tension in his jaw. He walked over and absently ran his fingers through my hair, the gesture oddly comforting.

Everything okay?I asked hesitantly.

My mother’s just upset about the maid I fired,he said dismissively. Nothing important.

Which maid?I asked, remembering the previous night’s events. The one from last night?

Yes,he confirmed, his tone revealing nothing of his thoughts.

I bit my lip nervously. Is sheis she angry with me too?

Derek’s eyes narrowed slightly as he noticed my anxiety. He pulled me against his chest, enveloping me in his familiar scent. Why do you look

so worried?

I chewed my lower lip, unable to articulate my fears. Derek bent down and kissed me gently, but even that couldn’t ease the knot forming in

my stomach.

No one would dare be angry with you,he said firmly, his voice dropping to that authoritative tone that left no room for argument. They know who you have behind you. You’re my woman.

My cheeks flushed at his possessive declaration. Despite everything, those words still had the power to make my heart race.

You can come downstairs for breakfast with my mother,he continued, releasing me. Just calm down. She won’t do anything to you.

She knows I’m here?I asked, unable to hide my alarm.

Derek shrugged. She probably smelled your scent. It doesn’t matter. Just relax, she won’t harm you.

With that, he disappeared into the bathroom. I heard the shower turn on and took a deep breath, deciding to head downstairs rather than wait.

anxiously in the bedroom.

As I descended the stairs, I could hear voices coming from the living room. Judy Stone stood in the center of the room, her elegant figure dressed impeccably in a designer suit. Martha was standing before her, head slightly bowed in deference.

*and I’ve replaced all the linens as you requested when you called last month, Mrs. Stone. The kitchen has also been restocked with the Alpha’s preferred-

Judy raised her hand, cutting Martha off. I understand. That will be all.

Martha nodded and turned to leave, noticing me at the bottom of the stairs. Her eyes widened slightly before she quickly composed her expression and hurried past me.

I swallowed hard and stepped forward. Good morning, Mrs. Stone.

Judy’s eyes snapped to mine, her gaze traveling slowly from my face down to the clothes I wore, then back up again. Her expression remained impassive, but I could sense her disapproval radiating like a physical force.

Sit down, she said, gesturing to the sofa across from her. Once I’d complied, she turned to Martha, who was lingering uncertainly by the doorway. You may leave us.

When we were alone, Judy settled herself in an armchair, her posture perfect, her hands folded neatly in her lap. The silence stretched between us until she finally spoke.

I won’t ask what you’re doing in this house. It’s obvious you’re with my eldest son.Her voice was controlled, but I could hear the underlying tension. What I don’t understand is why.

Mrs. Stone, I—
