At this, Yvonne said sweetly, “Thank you for agreeing, Caroline” 

Caroline didn’t react. “No need to thank me. I hope you’ll take good care of Aunt Mary after this.” 

“Of course I will.” Yvonne hugged Marietta’s arm. 

Caroline didn’t say anything more. 

When the dinner came to an end, Caroline felt even more dejected. Although Marietta purposely 

ran after her to apologize, Caroline’s mood didn’t get better. 

Her low spirits weren’t caused by Yvonne forcing her to change the way she addressed Marietta. It 

was how Yvonne treated Marietta. 

Caroline was saddened by the way Yvonne seemed to do whatever she wanted just because she 

was Marietta’s daughter. Today, she had asked Marietta to renounce Caroline as her goddaughter. 

But what would happen in the future? 

“Darling, are you still thinking about what happened during dinner?” Kirk raised his hands and 

started gently massaging Caroline’s temples. 

Caroline lay her head on Kirk’s shoulder. “Yeah.” She continued, “I just feel like Yvonne shouldn’t 

use the love Aunt Mary has for her to do whatever she wants. Kirk, do you think I’m being nosy 

here?” 

He caressed her hair. Once she slowly calmed down, he said, “Darling, everyone sees things. 

differently. When something happens, you can’t only look at it from your point of view.” 

“But,” Caroline raised her head, “I could feel that Aunt Mary was very unhappy.” 

In truth, Caroline didn’t know why her heart stung so much. She felt Marietta shouldn’t be treated 

this way. 

But now, the most she was was Marietta’s friend. What right did she have to say anything? 

Kirk’s heart ached for Caroline. He hugged her waist. Caroline was a great person, but sometimes, 

she was simply too kind. 

When they arrived back home, Caroline was so exhausted that she immediately collapsed into 

bed. When Kirk walked in, he saw Caroline bundled up in the sheets, wrapping herself up tight.

“Darling…” Kirk bent down and gently put his hand to her forehead. It was hot to the touch. It seemed Caroline had a fever. 

Kirk immediately got his phone and called Sean. “Come over immediately.” 

Sean had been comfortably enjoying his time in the land of dreams. When he heard this, he crawled out of bed. “Alright, I’ll be right there.” 

Kirk hung up. 

Beside Sean, Gwen got up, rubbing her sleep–crusted eyes. “What’s going on?” 

Sean replied, “Something must have happened to Caroline. I’ve got to make a trip there. Be good and rest. Wait for me to get back.” 

But Gwen had already gotten out of bed. “I’m going with you.” 

Sean wanted to say something further against it, but Gwen was quickly getting dressed. Left with 

no other choice, Sean brought Gwen along to Caroline’s apartment. 

When they arrived, Sean immediately asked Kirk, who had come to open the door, “What happened to Caroline?” 

Kirk’s expression was very solemn. “She got a fever after we got home.” 

“A fever?” Sean passed Kirk a thermometer from the first–aid kit. Then, he checked Caroline’s eyes, finding them strangely red. 

His heart skipped a beat, and a bad feeling grew in his stomach. 

Caroline suddenly opened her eyes. Her reddened eyes stared right at Sean, making him jump.
