Chapter 4
I clenched my fists, coldly staring at her.
“Enemy? What do you mean? What did my parents ever do to you that warranted butchering them like that?”
Alone with me, she dropped her act, her eyes turning vicious.
“What did they do to me? You should ask what they didn’t do! If not for them, my father’s company wouldn’t have gone bankrupt, and he wouldn’t have been driven to suicide! You destroyed everything I had, and now I’m just returning the favor. Can’t handle it? What’s wrong? Seeing your parents‘ killer standing right in front of you, unpunished–does it hurt? I should thank your fiancé and husband. Without them, I couldn’t live the good life I have today! Your father was still thinking of you when he died. I specially recorded a video of him begging. Want to see it? Get on your knees and beg me.”
Images of my parents‘ brutal deaths flashed before my eyes. Furious, with bloodshot eyes, I slapped her
hard across the face. The crisp sound rang out.
Erin didn’t get angry. She laughed instead.
Using my force, she fell straight to the ground.
Before I could react, Nathan rushed in and kicked me in the chest, causing me collapsed on the floor.
He held Erin in his arms, looking at me with rage.
“Sophie, what are you doing? Have you lost your mind? Erin is pregnant. Why would you hit her?”
Nathan’s relatives rushed in at the commotion, looking like they wanted to stab me with their glares.
Erin weakly clung to his shoulder, crying pitifully.
“Nathan, I’m sorry. I just wanted to apologize to Sophie for the misunderstanding five years ago. I didn’t
expect her to suddenly attack me… It’s okay. Five years ago, Michael broke off the engagement. We wronged her. Let’s consider this payback. Don’t blame Sophie.”
Pain gradually spread from below. I broke out in a cold sweat.
“Misunderstanding? How dare you call it a misunderstanding?”

“Nathan, what really happened five years ago? Don’t you owe me an explanation?”
Panic flashed in Nathan’s eyes, but he still forced himself to say: “I’ve been investigating that case’s perpetrator all along. I’ve told you it has nothing to do with Erin. Why do you insist on blaming her? I’m a detective–don’t you trust me? Without clear facts, how can you attack Erin? Sophie, apologize to her
now!”
His mother’s face turned cold as she rushed forward and slapped me.
“You Bitch! Still trying to frame Erin? Everyone knows my son’s investigative abilities. He said it has nothing to do with Erin. What right do you have to hit her? Just an orphan with dead parents, and you think you’re something special? If my son hadn’t saved you, who knows which hotel you’d be selling yourself in to pay off debts! They say no honest merchant, and I think your parents‘ deaths were karma for their black hearts! Nathan, forget her. Take Erin to the hospital first. She’s still carrying a child!”
Without another glance at me, Nathan carried Erin out of the house.
Five years of love vanished in that moment.
Blood gradually seeped out below me, but Nathan’s parents drove me out of the house that night. Though a passerby took me to the emergency room, I still lost the baby.
Late that night, Nathan sent me a message, his words full of humility.
“Sophie, don’t overthink tonight’s events. I know you didn’t mean it. Erin is my brother’s wife–I had to take her side for Michael’s sake. Once she’s out of danger, I’ll personally apologize. We’ll go to your favorite restaurant. Okay? Don’t be angry. It’s bad for our baby. My parents just spoke thoughtlessly in
the heat of the moment.”
So he still remembered our child.
I curled my lips in derision. “Okay, I’ll wait for you to come back.”
“Thank you for understanding, honey.”
That night, Erin posted another update from the hospital. In the photo, a man leaned against her hospital bed, worry
evident on his sleeping face.
Early the next morning, I checked out of the hospital and headed straight to the airport with my luggage.
